25% of the hiring decision is already made before your 1st interview and recruiters often turn to your online presence to pre-qualify your candidacy for the job. Your digital footprint basically includes everything you put out publicly online, (pics, posts, blogs, etc.). A solid online presence shows employers who you are, builds credibility, and ultimately helps you stand out from the pack so be mindful about what you say and where you say it to avoid disqualification. http://learntocodewith.me/posts/online-presence/

Behavioral questions are commonly used by interviewers to identify your strengths and weaknesses. For example, “Tell me about a time when you had to go above and beyond the call of duty to get the job done.” Don’t waste the opportunity to stand out from the other applicants with a general response. Use a storytelling approach to keep your answer personal, unique, and authentic. This is a great article to help you prepare. https://www.themuse.com/advice/the-interview-technique-you-should-be-using

Life or Death? That is the question this UPS driver faced, saving this woman from being held captive in her home. Who knew her last hope, would be a UPS driver delivering a package to her front door step. This is a reminder, you never know the difference you can make in a person's life just by saying a word, a statement, or a kind gesture.http://www.cnn.com/2016/12/09/us/ups-driver-helps-free-woman/index.html

Bold move on behalf of the Portland,OR city council to penalize companies that give higher ratios of pay to CEOs with higher taxes. Some may see this at this as good method to level out the income inequality issue but how does this cultivate more new business and jobs in Portland and other cities that choose to follow along this path. Continually taxing and penalizing the hell out of the well to do to solve all the local and national economic deficits eventually get’s old and inspires less people to aspire to be within the well to do. At what point does income equality simply and unanimously become the morally right thing to do for corporate and government decision makers in this country? http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/portland-ceo-pay-1.3886955?ex_cid=SigDig

Are you currently a service worker or cashier? Do you think your company will opt to replace you with this technology? New overtime pay rules and $15 minimum wage protest has more and more employers looking at automated resource options to reduce employment costs. Big retail employers like Walmart (Neighborhood) and and Target (Express) already have the small store concept locations where they can use this virtual checkout technology. Do you think there’s anything you can do now to prepare for a possible future job loss? http://adage.com/article/digital/amazon-means-future-retail/307020/

This is a great little summary reminder of how important communication skills are for you to increase your earnings and your progression in your worklife! Doesn't matter what you do - being able to succinctly communicate well is key (and often takes practice). Find a Dale Carnegie speakers course, take some online writing courses, lots you can do these days to tighten up - but it will really pay off. Also - never email when you can call; never call when you can meet. Its always better to increase the human interaction to achieve success in whatever you are trying to accomplish in your communication!!

This report about the Zika virus spreading around our hometown has my girlfriend and me concerned about my new job. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/11/29/texas-reports-first-case-locally-transmitted-zika/94591412/ I just started my first job as a general laborer job at a construction development site outside of San Antonio. The mornings start off cool but the day warms up and I start to sweat really fast once I get to unloading equipment digging trenches and cleaning up around the site. I get home with all kinds of bumps bruises and insect bites but they usually go away in a day or two so I haven’t had a problem. This new Zika virus is a whole other problem. Should I be more careful at work now and is this a sickness I can give to my girlfriend? We are planning on getting married and have kids some day so should I be worried about this virus? I don’t know just how serious this is or if I should start looking for another job again. What can I do?

I’m grateful for Obamacare. My wife and I have been in and out of jobs over the last few years due to layoffs and plant closings but we have still been able to afford health care coverage for our family. The payments go up or down depending whenever our combined income changes but it’s still manageable. Our youngest has asthma and we pay $30 for his inhalers which would cost $175 each if we had no insurance. The programs a great help while we look for permanent full time employment. I'm open to support improving the program but I hope the the new president doesn’t get rid of it. http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/first-read-s-morning-clips-what-s-next-health-care-n689491

Why is a $15 minimum wage even a topic of discussion? How can families still survive on anything less than $15 per hour anywhere in the US? Walmart and Amazon, for example, probably employ more people than the US Military and still report million dollar earnings each year. They claim to value their employees contribution to the business and often refer to them as “key corporate assets” so why don’t they share more of the bottom line profits with their employees? http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/workers-put-the-minimum-wage-back-in-the-spotlight/
