Hello all, I hope this doesn't become a novella, however I need to ask the ' hive mind' for support . I moved 900 miles to be with family, my father has a serious heart condition and my children asked me to come to help out. So far I have been underemployed and am trying to reinvent myself . My work experience is very diverse, I worked a lot of different jobs in my life purposely, to experience as much as I could and I found my calling about 5 years ago working with people who have Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. I was a conflict free case manager, meaning I managed 30 people ensuring they got the services and supports they needed while maintaining and teaching Person Centered Thinking among the staff and agencies. This is sort of technical jargon to mean, the person comes first. This position doesn't exist here in Rhode Island although it is something that has been agreed is needed by those who make things happen for disabled people in the state. I am working part time as a therapeutic worker implementing behavioral goals. My push is towards being an advocate for people with disabilities and working with folks as a case manager , creating my previous job and it's something happening, recognized as being implemented in the future by the State Agency that oversees this and by people in the community. My fear is that I am chasing a pipe dream and wasting time. I am near 60 and this has been a factor in employment, I also don't have a Bachelor's degree . There seems to be a glut of people with Social Work degrees and little to no real experience. I have been treated badly for being from TN, even though I am from Michigan and lived in Florida for 30 years and in TN for 10 years. I am overlooked for the young, out of college types with no experience but a degree. I guess my question is, do you have any advice for me? I am networking hard and taking a certification class which is furthering the type of plan writing I did in TN with the newest approaches being advocated by the State of RI. I have directly contacted the State Agency Director and am getting to know the people who submit legislature and know anyone who is a mover and shaker. Still, I am feeling frustrated and a bit hopeless. What say you?
