I was laid off in January. Since then I decided to take the time to get some much desired certifications. By August I should have a PMP, CCBA, ITIL and SSGB to add to my CSM. I will also have taken advance courses in MS Project, Excel and MySQL.

I am praying, and asking you all to pray, that I took the right direction. I have OTJ training but lacked certifications that seemed to be required for the positions of IT Project Coordinator or IT Project Manager.

For those of you that don't know, the government has a program called WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act) that have funded my training to a total cost of almost $10k. I say take a chance at retooling. I believe it can only help in my job search. I found out about WIOA when I filed for my unemployment. I have a great career coach and am thankful for this opportunity.

If you know of jobs, please share.

I am a veteran software programmer that got away from the industry for about 8 years to pursue management (oh what a mistake that was!). I've gotten re-certified in all of the latest languages for web development including: JavaScript, HTML 5, CSS 3, jQuery, Bootstrap, MySQL, and PHP and I am currently getting certified in the latest releases of Java and Spring. What I have experienced so far is putting out well over 100 applications - and I've had two interviews - which neither panned out. It seemed that both companies were very excited to meet with me after looking at my resume and my web site. I consider myself fairly well spoken, and I hold a degree in biology with an emphasis in biochemistry. So I can say that my experience and public speaking/social engagement are not the issues - and I promise that my hygiene is impeccable. I dressed properly (suit, proper hair cut, and neatly trimmed facial hair). Simply put, I can only wonder if it is my age that is affecting their decision as I am 54. I truly do not understand why this would be an issue as I am in great shape (I lift weights 5 days a week and eat healthy). Just not sure why this is happening. Trying to keep the faith in that the next application that I put out might very well be my stairway to securing another job. One last thing - I was laid off at the end of the year - one of the last ones let go from that company and my previous boss (owner of the company) has even written recommendation letters for me. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks you, Mike

It has been seven months since losing my job and I have been on several interviews with no luck. I have even decided to take some courses to become A+ certified. Now I have exhausted my unemployment. Yet I am staying positive. I just want to thank all who have been posting positive, constructive posts. It has encouraged me to know I am not alone.

Graduated in Dec. 2015 with a B.S in mathematics with a minor in statistics. Still can't find a job. I really want to go into data analytics. I practice interviewing, keep up on statistical/computer programs; begin teaching myself programs such as python and SQL; currently studying for SAS Base Program Exam. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I had my resume and cover letter looked at by career services at my school. Any advice? Getting really frustrated here. I tried grad school, but I really don't want to go back to school, I really want to work.
