Looking for a job? Me, too. Have been for ages. And given my experience, industry awards, résumé and references, it's absurd that I"m still out of work. But - a conversation I just had with a friend helped me shed a little light on a big part of the reason why this might be happening.

Strap in. Because this is gonna blow your mind.

A little background: I know someone who works in human resources at a very large local company. For years - YEARS - this company been advertising for a job that PRECISELY fits my qualifications. Speaking more accurately, I'm overqualified. They'd be damn lucky to have me.

Anyway...I applied for the job. Never heard anything. Applied again. Never heard anything. Followed up. Never heard anything. I've probably appplied for this gig at least 5 or 6 times in the last few years it's been turning up on the job sites I visit. And it's still listed. And, again...I check every box on their qualifications list. I could not BE more of an ideal candidate for this position. But still - nothing. So, I dropped a line to my friend who works there, in human resources. And this person let me in on what I think probably the biggest scam I've ever heard of.

Here's a big part of the reason why so many of us have been out of work for so long, despite being very, very qualified:

These jobs don't actually exist.

Sure, companies advertise for them. They accept applications. But they'll never fill the jobs, because the jobs aren't really there. So why are they continually advertising for them? Actively seeking applicants? Several reasons.

First: Y'know how you always hear about job reports, and the news says, "The economy has added (X) number of jobs this quarter"? Well, that doesn't mean that (X) number of people have been HIRED in that amount of time. It means exactly what it says. Just that these jobs have been ADDED by employers. That big-name companies have technically made "jobs" AVAILABLE. But the jobs themselves? They aren't really there. They will never be filled.

And why?

Politics, that's why. Depending on which political party a given company traditionally contributes to, the bigwigs and higher-ups at these large corporations are under intense pressure from politicians to create phantom jobs. Jobs that don't technically exist. Reason being, this artificially pumps up the state employment stats, and makes it appear as though the economy and the job numbers are doing way better than they actually are.

Think about it: Politicians run on "creating jobs." But politicians can't actually do that. EMPLOYERS can. So, they do. They create jobs. Fake, phantom jobs that they will never hire people to fill. It's purely cosmetic; a complete fabrication. It's done only for the purpose of artificially inflating an economic indicator, and appeasing the politicians.

And I can hear you thinking: "But what do the employers get out of it?"

Well, that's the worst part. Because, as it turns out, in exchange for artificially inflating the jobs numbers, these employers get a kickback from the state in the form of BIG discounts on their unemployment insurance payments! Yeah, you read that right. All employers are legally obligated to pay into state unemployment insurance in order to cover payments to out-of-work people. That's where the funding for unemployment checks comes from. But big-money employers don't like having to pay so much, especially to cover people who they view as deadbeats. So, when employers go to the state, and say, "Gosh, we've ADDED all these jobs, but just can't find qualified applicants to fill them," the state turns around and says, "No problem. Here...Have a nice, fat tax credit." And it all goes straight to their bottom line in the form of millions and millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, while government and industry engage in all of this zero-sum brinksmanship, countless people who are out of work continue to be out of work with no relief in sight.

I got this information straight from the horse's mouth: A senior HR employee at one of the biggest corporations in my state. I am not a conspiracy theorist. And I"m also not making this up. This is 100% truth, straight from the HR department of a multi-million dollar corporation. One that records prove is in bed with its state government.

So, if you've been out of work for as long as I have, now you know what's up: A giant, corrupt, cotton-candy machine that spins something that LOOKS huge, but that has very little actual substance. A system in which the states can report huge numbers of jobs "added," employers get millions in kickbacks, and the worker gets screwed. AGAIN.

Maybe that's cold comfort, but I still hope it helps on some level to know the truth.

I have been working in West Texas in the oil field, I just wanted to let any job seekers know that if you are interested that it's booming out here with jobs, every week while listening to the radio I normally hear 3 to 4 announcements of job fairs. Alot of people don't realize that accommodations and food is provided by the companies that are hiring out here. The normal schedule is 14 on and 7 off,. I have worked with people from all over the US that come to west Texas to work. Off the top of my head some of the companies that are hiring are FTSI, profrac, liberty frac, Keene, cudd, and many more, just Google oil field jobs in West Texas, or Google jobs in Odessa or Midland.

No matter what job site you use, if you have a profile and/or resume posted, you are bound to hear from a myriad of companies advising you that you have some of the skills and qualities that they are looking for in filling a variety of positions with an established company.

You will most likely get an interview immediately, you will go to the interview and you will meet with a manager for a quick 5 minutes and they will invite you to stay for the next round of interviews. From there you will be escorted to a room where there are literally 20 to 30 other applicants waiting. That is when you will get the pitch...

It's a life insurance sales position using a proven method. And lucky you, you get to use the method to make money. By selling life insurance. The position will require you chasing "pre-qualified" leads, driving around the state meeting with people who allegedly expressed interest but really have no desire to talk to you. You will be out "in the field" for twelve or more hours a day, unpaid. You will put miles on your car and not get reimbursement. You will fill your tank up two or three times a week and you won't get reimbursed.

If you happen to be good at sales, then in a year you can open your own branch and recruit your own team to sell under the company umbrella in a sort of pyramid/MLM design.

Very few people will find the work rewarding and even fewer will actually be able to forge a career out of it. It can actually leave you financially broke if you aren't closing deals. If you are considering taking a job like this, you should have a nest egg saved up that you can live off of while getting into the business.

Be careful of phrases like "Unlimited Income Potential", it's fluff at best and misleading at worst. Look online for other agencies using the same sales pitch. You will notice a lot of agencies use the same template but have different agency names.

Life Insurance is a legitimate product, and these "agencies" do sell actual products and services, but often under false/misleading tactics. For example, they may post an ad for a free identity kit to which people respond, because who doesn't want to be prepared should their child get abducted. They will tell the people responding to the ad that an agent will deliver the kits. That's you. You bring them their kit then try to sell them life insurance products. It's not what the "client" was expecting, so you are there, in their house, under false pretenses. Not a good way to do business.

With all that said, if you think you ave what it takes, by all means, live the dream. If you are looking for a legitimate career with guaranteed hours and guaranteed pay, then this is not for you, especially if you are not a sales person by nature.

Good luck in your job search, stay safe and sane!

Don't even try they always say they aren't hiring which is most of the time a lie. They yell a lot. Rude to customers and a bit racist. You get in trouble for the slightest mistake.
