It seems like nowadays everyone is doing background checks. It used to be little mom and pop places didn't care but now everyone I speak to wants a check 'to see if I can legally work in the US '... Until my felony comes up ... Then it's oops sorry...

I recently plead guilty to a felony drug possession. Believe it or not I actually was innocent but wasn’t willing to risk a trial and being found guilty so I plead. This was the only felony conviction on my record and I’m 45 yrs old. I have since applied for and interviewed for a few management positions. In one case I was told by the hiring manager I gave the best interview he has had in 6 months. All was good until they asked about a criminal record. I was honest and told them the whole story. The next day I was emailed that I wouldn’t be considered for the position. No reason or or reference to my record or if they even did perform a background check. I was recently asked to apply for another management position by a very large transportation company. So I applied and again was told I gave a great interview and was in fact asked to interview for an even higher management position, which I did. Two days later I was offered a position. I was emailed an offer sheet and was told if I accepted the offer the next step would be to schedule a pre-employment drug test and background test. I was then given a choice of 2 start dates. One in 2 weeks, the other in 3.

So I guess my question is, A) why would this company go through the whole process of offering me a management position prior to a background check, when other companies ran the check before even offering me a position? Seems like they would want to run a background check first, so as not to waste any time with someone who may (or may not) fail. B) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle things once the results of the background check comes back?

I currently work in the food industry as a bartender/server and have been wanting to get out and begin employment with a company that I can grow with and gain experience with in a different field. My goal this spring was to land a sales job, which the search was going good. I landed a job in a field that I knew I was going to grow and flourish in and I put in my two weeks with my current restaurant job.

The problem I am faced with is that I have a criminal history and it bans me from being employed with most companies. Low and behold I receive a call this morning from the company that was going to hire me and they cannot due to pressure from corporate and me not being able to coexist with their insurance. Most people look at me and say "Well tough luck." or "You should have thought about that before you broke the law." I cannot take back what happened to me. What happened will be erased from my record in due time. People WANT to hire me, but they cannot because of the legal side. I do not want to be stuck working somewhere that I'll have no passion to be my best all the time.

Is there anybody I can talk to or consult with that can coach me through this? It's throwing me through a loop. All I want at this point is to get started.

I've been searching for a part time job for years to supplement my disability check but I've a criminal history so I'm stuck working for daily labor places that gives jobs to crackheads and homeless people I have an associate's degree in electronics technology but I'm scared to apply for the good jobs... I lived in Chicago all my life and now I live in Tallahassee Florida. Are there jobs for felons in Tallahassee at all?

Why is it that jobs are turning me down for "pending charges" I haven't even been convicted, I haven't had a court date set yet. What do I do? Anyone have advice?
