Sometimes our willingness to “keep it real” during an interview can lead to unconsciously overexposing too much details about our personal lives that could serve to hurt rather than help us get the job offer. Although we’re never 100% sure what type of candidate the employer is looking to fill the job it’s always a good strategy for us to to get prepared to handle those landmine questions frequently asked by managers to discover any potential weaknesses. Below are 3 personal experiences you should carefully consider before your next interview.

Unstable Personal Life (Relationships), we all experience personal conflicts with people in our lives at one point or another but leaking negative details over a recent divorce, restraining order, or volatile spouse issues during an interview could be perceived as personal instability that can interfere with your work performance in the long run. Remember, employers are looking for candidates that are going to help them reach goals and grow the business so if you’re going to share experiences about you personal life make sure to keep them light and appropriate.

Financial Problems, it’s no secret that financial compensation one of the main reasons you need a job but laying out all of your financial distress isn’t going to earn you any brownie points or sympathy during an interview. Too many details about how you’re about to lose everything if you don’t get hired will cause some managers to question your organizational skills and doubts over your ability to handle the business finances.

Legal Problems, this is a tricky one because you never know exactly what the employer(s) will be investigating during a background check. Don’t offer this information up freely in anticipation of what you think might show up on the investigation. Give yourself a chance to be fair evaluated as a potential employee and wait until you’re asked to provide details about any legal issues during the hiring process. Focus your responses on highlighting your strengths and individual attributes that make you the perfect candidate for the job.

Can you think of any other topics of discussion that can eventually lead to deal breakers without carefully plan out responses? Please feel free to share.

So I have a meeting next week with a Program Manager who works at a company I've been dying to work for. I was networking through LinkedIn and found him and sent him a message requesting to speak with him via phone or email (Just not to push my limits). I explained to him how I've been applying to the company where he works (It's a franchise, not just one branch) and my application would never get referred (it's super selective). To my surprise, he read my LinkedIn message and told me to shoot him an email so he could see if we can schedule a phone call or time when I could come to his office. He then gave me his email, I emailed him and he sent me a Google Invite for a meeting next week. I've had an informational interview for a different company once and the girl I spoke to was not far from my age. The informational didn't really go anywhere or help my chances. It was basically a waste of time. So my question is, what are the odds of this "so called meeting" with the Program Manager turning into something beneficial like a job offer or something between those lines?

Several weeks ago, I was contacted via email for a second interview. The interview will be 2 1/2 hours and has a test. I agreed via email and verified that the email went through. I never received a confirmation email. I reached out today to see if we were still having the interview tomorrow. I haven't recieved a reply. What should I do? Should I get all dressed up, take time off work and show up for an interview that I'm not sure is going to happen? I don't really want to take the time off work to go over there just to be embarrassed when they say there is no interview. I used to work there so I know the guards and really don't want to look like a fool and waste my time.

“Tell me about a recent situation in which you had to deal with a very upset customer or coworker?”

Good story telling is the key to success on an interview.

The STAR interview method is designed to help you outline the specific details of a previous workplace experience where you went above and beyond in a manner that is both concise and descriptive. Here are the basics:

Situation - describe the situation, challenge, or problem you were confronted with. “The customer was irate because…”

Task - what’s your end goal? “My goal was to satisfy this customer complaint within a timely manner."

Action - describe in detail the specific actions you took. Keep the focus on YOU. “I immediately took ownership of the customers concerns and…”

Result - Time to shine! Describe the positive outcome(s) produced by your actions.

Thoughts?

A question asked in my LinkedIn network was: "You're being asked during the interview if you're currently applying for other positions at other companies... Do you think your answer might be one of the decisive factors whether they hire you or not...?"

My response: It's all in delivery...

"Yes, I am exploring other opportunities, because I believe in making informed decisions with all options open. Never take an offer off the table, until the table breaks in suspense."

I recently went for a job interview and I was asked "how do you deal with stress"? Really how do you answer such a question? I pray or meditate, I cry, I pop a pill or take a drink to relieve the stress, I take a walk, I eat, I sleep on it. What answer could he have possibly wanted? Life can be stressful; sometimes I have to deal with ongoing stress positively or it can be negatively. Now, I can say I do some of the above but not all. At one time yes. I did pop thousands of pills and at that one minute it did take me away from my stress, but in the long run it did not relieve my stress for long. It actually gave me negative consequences. Today, I take life's stresses head on and hope for the best. People are different and situations are different. So, how you deal with stress in each situations is not the same. To me that question was a bit vague.

I have been interviewing for two months for a new position as I lost my job in May.

One of my former employers, a company I left Feb of 2017, has very serious allegations surrounding them. These allegations include tax fraud and drugs in the office. Some of the companies with whom I have interviewed have heard of these rumors and have asked me to elbkeate. I can't speak to the tax fraud allegations, but I have indeed witnesses the CEO use in the office.

My dilemma is that I don't want to lie and say the rumors aren't true, but also do not want to completely throw them under the bus. It was an uncomfortable environment, so I left. I try to focus on finding employment as opposed to focus on painting them as villains.

Am I wrong here? Should I talk more about these rumors when asked?
