#JST: 10 tips for landing your dream job in 2018 - 2019

#besttentipsforlandingyourdreamjob #JobcaseroftheDay #jobsearch 10 tips for landing your dream job in 2018 -2019. Identify your skill sets. Utilize online resources and company websites. Narrow down your search to the best options. Save the best job listings for future reference. Customize your resume to match each position you apply to. Don't restate your resume in your cover letter. Relying on advice from experts on everything from how to look for a job to landing an interview and following-up with hiring managers, I have compiled the top tips job seekers should follow to secure their dream position in 2018 - 2019.

  1. Identify your skill sets Many people start their job search by looking at the job titles that sound most fitting to their career goals. While this method may prove to be successful for some, career experts suggest job seekers look at the required skills of a position instead. By doing this, says employees will be able to identify the skill sets they already possess and the jobs that best match their experiences.

Also, since job titles are constantly changing, focusing on the required skills of a position can open your search up to job titles that you didn't even know matched your expertise.

  1. Utilize online resources and company websites Thanks to the internet, looking for a job today goes far beyond asking a friend and searching for an opening in the newspaper. Now, companies use their website to advertise job openings, and job search platforms can also help you identify opportunities. Use these sites to not only search for a specific position but to also look for "similar jobs" or "suggested jobs" that may pique your interest.

  2. Narrow down your search to the best options Rather than apply to any and every opening you see, it's best to narrow down your search and only apply to the positions that sound most fitting to your skill sets and career goals. To go a step further in ensuring that a job is right for you, do a little bit of background research on the company to get a sense of its values and why employees do or don't like working there. Also, dig into your own network to see if you're connected to someone who has experience at the company and who can share their perspective on working there.

Connecting with someone at the company can also be an extra way for you to get your foot in the door.

"Companies always give preferential treatment to employee referrals," "If you don't know someone there, then volunteering at a company's local charity event can also be a great way to meet people."

  1. Save the best job listings for future reference Even after you've submitted your application for a job, you should still copy and paste or print the job listing for future reference. With many employers removing a position once they've received enough applicants, Saving a job description can help you prepare for an interview when you want to look back on the qualifications needed.

  2. Customize your resume to match each position you apply to Even if you're looking at jobs that are all within the same industry, it's still important to tailor your resume so that it matches each specific job you apply to. By doing so, you give yourself a competitive edge over the resumes that hiring managers to know are used for any and every job.

  3. Don't restate your resume in your cover letter Your cover letter should not read like an extra copy of your resume. Instead, it should provide hiring managers with more background information about who you are and why you are a right fit for the position and the company. It should also include a call to action like, "I look forward to connecting to discuss next steps," so the employer knows just how interested you are in moving forward with the position.

If a job application doesn't specifically ask for a cover letter, it never hurts to send one anyway. It can be the determining factor that sets you apart from the rest of the competition.

  1. Prepare for your interview Before going on an interview, jobs seekers do the following three things:

  2. Research the company you are interviewing with and the work they do.

  3. Practice answering tough and common interview questions beforehand.

  4. Look up background information about the individual you are interviewing with.

The preparation you do for an interview can be the key to you landing a job.

"I myself have used this query for years, and oh, the answers I've heard — the good, the bad and the ugly — and always so revealing."

  1. Always ask questions In addition to preparing yourself for how to properly answer an interview question, you should also prep yourself on what information you want to know from the interviewer. if you don't ask questions in an interview you can easily "run the risk of unintentionally appearing disengaged or uninterested."

To show your interest, asking questions about the growth opportunities at the company or inquiring about the biggest challenges people face working there.

  1. Send a thank you note To really stand out and show your appreciation for the interview, you should always send a follow-up note thanking the hiring managers for taking time out of their schedule to meet with you. This note can be sent via email or snail mail, but before sending you should triple check to make sure there are no grammatical errors and that all names are spelled correctly.

  2. Don't accept the job on the spot If offered the position, you should thank the employer for the opportunity and confirm when you will need to accept the job. Rather than giving an answer right away, you should use the time you have to carefully consider if the offer is right for you and to assess whether you need to negotiate your salary. Tools like Glassdoor's Know Your Worth can help you measure the market pay for a job based on where you live, your job title and your relevant work experience.

Although I have still not had any luck landing a new position, by being active on this site, Jobcase awarded me a $100 Amazon gift card!!! NO JOKE! They have nothing to do with this post, I swear. I actually opened my email today and I saw what I almost just scrolled past, thinking it was a junk or spam email. I'm so glad I looked twice....it was from one of the heads of this site. Even after it opened it and it said I was the "Jobcaser of the Day" and that I won a $100 Amazon gift card, I still didn't believe it was legit. It asked me to just simply reply the word "YES" back to the email...that was it. I was actually hesitant because I was thinking, is this a trick? Am I saying yes here but it will be turned into me saying yes to some other offer or service. I decided to take the chance and within minutes they sent me the code and I was able to apply it right to my Amazon account. For someone out of work, it felt like I hit the lottery...lol! I bought myself a couple new interview dresses to celebrate. I still can't believe this actually happened but it's 100% true and legit. I guess the moral of the story is, interact as much as possible to network on here, share, post, comment, ect. Also, make sure not to disregard emails that look "iffy".... take a careful chance to at least check them out.

I just wanted to take a moment to share my appreciation to Jobcase. This site has actually provided me a lot over the years.

  1. A community. It has given me a whole world of like minded individuals to share with.
  2. A Future. Without this site and community I would have never come to the decision to start my own business. Which has given me joy and a sense of purpose.
  3. Employment Before deciding to start my own business, I had the pleasure of finding a great job, that I have been given the option to return too if needed. This is a wonderful site, with a wonderful community. Never stop posting, never stop asking, and never stop looking.

Hello Everyone, I want to share the good news with you all! After a two month journey, I was finally able to acquire a permanent position in the career path I wanted, Human Resources! This is an entry-level position and I understand I must take half a step back in order to take two forward! Let me share with you what I did differently with this interview and why it was successful!

I paid a professional resume builder to redo my resume which got the attention of several companies as my resume passed the automatic program that filters all resumes. The resumes they choose are the ones that have the keywords they list on the job description, make sure you have those included. Study the job description and look in between the lines for what they are truly seeking a candidate. I researched the company, its mission, and all the Glassdoor or other website reviews of the company, candidates will place tips on interview experiences. Also, if you know who is interviewing you, look them up on LinkedIn it can be very helpful to know what are their responsibilities with the company. I then started practicing with a mirror by responding to interview questions that are normally asked in an interview. I summarized the main tasks of each position and added an accomplishment at the end of each summary. Important, you must memorize all of this prior to attending an interview. i also learned to answer what was a weakness of mine and my answer, " I tend to stay quiet in staff meetings as I like to listen attentively to what is being said, consequently it makes me seem as I am shy or quiet, I became cognizant of this and started working on this matter, now I try to speak out during staff meetings." You must share a weakness that comes out in a situation, acknowledge you are aware and that you are working on it now. Every question you answer make sure to point out your accomplishments such as a program or efficient way of doing a task that you brought onto the job. Now the last thing I did was sit outside in my car and for 5-10 mins I closed my eyes and visualized myself interviewing with my interviewers and I visualized how confident I answered the questions while winning over the interviewer. In my visualization, my interviewer was comfortable with me, smiling and convinced I was the best candidate. After doing this for 5-10 mins I prayed (I realize this is an individual preference).

I am sharing my experience in hopes that this may help any job seeker! I wish each and every one of you the best in your endeavor towards finding a job! Stay positive and never give up! #careerchange #JobcaseroftheDay #jobsearch #dontGiveUp
