Simply looking for opinions; last year I was let go from a position of 12 years where I worked my fingers to the bones, put in a lot of hours, was promoted twice and formed countless relationships, for all of it to end because of office politics and what I assume to be financial reasons. I promised myself I would never again subject myself to that kind of abuse nor kill myself for any job.

With that said, I have one opportunity starting Monday with a famous bookstore, working a technical position that is closer to entry level. My salary from what I used to make is cut in half, however it’s located half a mile from my house, I could literally walk to work which would save me money on gas and car expense, the job seems easy and the people seem nice so far. I figured out my finances and see that I can work with this salary. Also with a lower salary, I believe I would qualify for more grants and financial assistance for my son who is about to go to college in the fall. He is starting with a local community college so the cost won’t be too expensive.

I am also making round three of interviewing for a call center manager position with a well known Internet phone and TV provider. I would imagine the salary will be significantly higher, it’s about 10 to 15 minutes from my house and there may be a possibility I would have to work occasional weekends, nights and holidays.

Both are well-established companies and have fantastic benefits. Which would you pick?

Applied at Ewing about two weeks ago and last Tuesday got a call for interview for May 3 and a second interview yesterday May 8 and today was called for the offer. The lady from HR called to follow up on my interview and was told that the Supervisor and Branch Manager were pleased with my interview and was what they were looking for. BLESSED and it's a small world because I also got a call from another place Altura clinics for an interview bit told they lady that I just got offered the job at Ewing and asked which branch and told me her husband worked there . I asked for the name and it was the supervisor I interviewed with crazy. We both laughed and said she was happy for me and now she had something to funny to tell her husband tonight. Like I said small world so don't give up people there's something for everyone..

I recently plead guilty to a felony drug possession. Believe it or not I actually was innocent but wasn’t willing to risk a trial and being found guilty so I plead. This was the only felony conviction on my record and I’m 45 yrs old. I have since applied for and interviewed for a few management positions. In one case I was told by the hiring manager I gave the best interview he has had in 6 months. All was good until they asked about a criminal record. I was honest and told them the whole story. The next day I was emailed that I wouldn’t be considered for the position. No reason or or reference to my record or if they even did perform a background check. I was recently asked to apply for another management position by a very large transportation company. So I applied and again was told I gave a great interview and was in fact asked to interview for an even higher management position, which I did. Two days later I was offered a position. I was emailed an offer sheet and was told if I accepted the offer the next step would be to schedule a pre-employment drug test and background test. I was then given a choice of 2 start dates. One in 2 weeks, the other in 3.

So I guess my question is, A) why would this company go through the whole process of offering me a management position prior to a background check, when other companies ran the check before even offering me a position? Seems like they would want to run a background check first, so as not to waste any time with someone who may (or may not) fail. B) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle things once the results of the background check comes back?

I got a job offer at Corcoran state prison in CA. The commute is at least 90 minutes one way. I'd be working 3-10 hour days. Afraid I might fall asleep on drive to or from. Does anyone know of any good car services?

I'm here asking for an opinion. Is it smarter to grab this offer with $15 an hour same type of job (data entry clerk) but the workplace is 50miles far from home but it's a 9-hour work time per day or should I stick with my current job $11 an hour 8-hours per day 20miles far from home but the job is unstable so sometimes I lose hours. Should I stick or grab the new offer?
