Do You Have People Skills?

Sometimes called interpersonal skills, these skills are about interacting with others in an effective and friendly way. Are you a likable person?

People skills include mediating disputes, tolerating differences, trusting, and persuading others to your ideas. According to a survey, 62% of recruiters identify interpersonal skills as necessary, so showing them on your resume is always good. Below are examples.

  1. Include a Skills Section

List your key people skills in a dedicated skills section. Use specific terms that match the job description.

Example:

Skills

  • Excellent Communication
  • Team Collaboration
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Customer Service
  • Leadership and Mentoring
  1. Showcase People Skills in Your Professional Experience

Describe how you used your people skills in previous roles. Provide concrete examples to illustrate your abilities.

Example:

Professional Experience

  1. Highlight People Skills in Your Resume Summary

Use the resume summary to emphasize your strongest people skills and how they contribute to your professional success.

Example:

Summary

Results-driven customer service professional with over 4 years of experience in providing exceptional service and resolving conflicts. Adept at team collaboration, communication, and mentoring. Proven ability to enhance customer satisfaction and streamline processes in a fast-paced environment.

  1. Incorporate People Skills in Your Achievements

Use the achievements section to quantify how your people skills have made a positive impact.

Example:

Achievements

  • Increased customer satisfaction ratings by 15% through effective communication and problem-solving.

  • Reduced response time by 10% by collaborating with team members to streamline processes.

  • Successfully trained and mentored 15 new employees, leading to a 95% retention rate.

Listen carefully...

"Anything of value that deems worth having in life, requires boldness, consistency, focus and a positive projection for best results." ~ELA

A projection of your next job is the key! (See illustration below.)

Illegal Interview Question!

"Are You Married or Do You Have Children?"

This question appears harmless but is illegal to ask.

To ask about your marital status or family background violates anti-discrimination laws such as the Civil Rights Act. This sort of question comes with unfair presumptions about your availability or work commitment (particularly for women). Employers need to determine whether you fit the job or not — not how you conduct your personal life.

Know your rights. I wouldn't call the interviewer out on the spot. I would simply say something like "I have a happy life outside of work." After the interview if you felt violated you can file a complaint. #AWU #disability #jobs #interviewtip

Did you know!

89% of recruiters expect job candidates to submit a CoverLetter, according to Zety's 2025 Future of Work Report, which surveyed 753 recruiters or HR professionals involved in hiring.

The benefit of submitting one, whether your prospective employer asks for it or not, is that "the cover letter is an opportunity to shape the narrative of your candidacy and ensure the hiring manager understands how your experiences align with their needs.

Remember, however, not to repeat what is in your Resume. Explain why you are a good fit. #AWU #disability #jobs #coverletter

“That’s Not My Job.” Think twice before you say it at work. Why?

Even if it’s technically true, this phrase marks you as someone unwilling to grow or help the team.

Every workplace remembers the people who dodge responsibility. Instead of shutting down opportunities, frame it as a discussion about workload or training needs. This is about being seen as someone who can handle challenges professionally.

Your reputation is built on these small moments. Your Career advancement may be affected. #AWU #disability #jobs
