It depends on who told you you couldn't work with the boot on. Do you have this in writing? Are there any witnesses?

If your manager or any official at your company told you to go home because you could not work with the boot on, that could be a legal thing. This is could be illegal and a reason to sue the company.

If they terminated you because you were home after they told you to go home it is definitely a reason for a law suit. It all depends on what you can prove.

If you received instructions via email, try to print these messages out before you no longer have access to the email system.

I do not know what state you live in but in Maryland the department to contact is the Department of Labor and Licensing Regulations, DLLR. Every state has a state labor department. This is who you should call in your home state.

Contact them first thing Monday morning (as soon as they start working which is usually around 8 am) and tell them what happened to you.

If your ex-employer is trying these things and you can prove what they did is illegal, you should hold them accountable.

Good evening, I have been reading stories in this group for many months. Now, time to tell mine and get some ideas as to what to do or which way to lead. I am 60, have 35+ years of mortgage banking background. I was laid off from a job at national bank in April, 18 when my job was transferred to NC. I live in MD. I felt that I was not able to move due to the following reasons-1)no relocation offered 2)elderly parents that need assistance from me at least 1-2 times a week (one of three other siblings live here-wasn't fair to her, either) 3)finishing up year's probationary period with my mobility service dog-didn't want to screw that up.

Since November, 17 (lay off time), I have interviewed for banking jobs within and outside the company I was laid off from. Was told that I didn't have the sufficient amount of front facing customer service skills needed to get a job even as a bank teller. I had been a quality control analyst for the past 4 years. Prior to that time, I had been a front line production underwriter working for the same company. I had 6+ years with this bank.

I finished up the job in 4/18, got a 90 day severance. Started a temp job right at that time with a local credit union doing home equity loan processing. Broke my shoulder 2 weeks into that position and was told not to return. I healed up from that injury, started looking again and landed a position with a local non profit as a HUD Housing Counselor. Requested and was denied the reasonable accommodation for bringing the service dog to work. I was told that the manager feared for the safety of other employees and customers since the dog wears a muzzle and growled at her. I have a 4 year old yellow lab female to assist me with mobility issues. We are agency trained, not owner trained, and go through a lengthy training period of nearly 2 years. The "muzzle" was the dog's head halter. Also, the dog did not growl when she met this individual. It was lack of education. Reeling from this news has just sent me back months, if not years, in my confidence building and ability to present myself as a confident individual with something to contribute.

Since then, I have looked for jobs that would permit me to do some/all of my work from home. I have my mortgage originator license (passed in 8/18) and plan to sit for my health/life insurance license. At this point, I want to do something where they can't take my credentials away from me. Also, both of these jobs are customer service/front facing positions. That will not be a reason for me to not get a job any longer.

My resume and Linked In profiles have been reworked 3-4 times. I have been interviewing for jobs in the mortgage and insurance sales field, customer service jobs and appear to be able to handle interviews at that levels. If I don't bring up the service dog, they are more likely to hire me.

I am looking for any feedback, input and advice that you all may be able to offer.

Thanks,

Jane Harford
