It's sad when a degree keeps you from getting jobs. People think you can find something better than what they are offering in your field. Right now it's not as much about the pay as it is an income.

It's sad when you have a degree but still can't find a job.

Hey All, I was making $16/hr at a law firm when I was 22. Here we are 15 years later and business are still offering $14-$15/hr for the same thing I have been doing. I'm mid-30's now and it seems I'm over qualified for many Administrative positions and underqualified by 2 or 3 pieces of knowledge for $50-60K positions. I do not understand what is going on the atmosphere right now but there's definitely something. Bottom line is no one can live off of $14/hr with a rent/car/kids/pets and as many of you have said many companies are not even offering insurance. Not many people can even qualify for 3x rent at many apartment communities in which living takes most of our paychecks. This is an absolute crisis!!!

I've total 27+ years of experience 23+ in Airlines on key positions and 4 year in customer service I'm fed up searching and applying jobs till now haven't got any positive response Twice I've been told that I'm over qualified and this position will not pay you enough even though I was ready to do, and three time I've been regretted because I don't have experience working at Airport in USA How will I have experience unless I've been given a chance to perform I've family to feed don't know how long farther I have to look for favourable time If anybody can help me finding job at the airport operations/Customer Services, Aircraft weight and balance or shift Supervisor/managment may GOD will reward him/her forever

I've had employers tell me they can't hire me because I'm "overqualified" and that they are afraid I'm going to take their job because I know more then they do. It's not fair that I can't get employed because of my work history. You would think they would want to hire you because of your knowledge and experience. I just want to work to support my family.

I had a great interview, did a drug test(which was clean) for them to come back and tell me I was over qualified to do the job they were 'hiring for' yet my cousin and a few friends work for that company and they have(company) those that don't want to work hard(quit in a few days). Or a few that have to actually been given Narcan just to live. I don't get it. What is this over qualified? As this isn't the only company to tell me this.

Having had an obsession with programming related tasks since I was a small boy, I got many years of programming experience and ended up consulting for tech companies as soon as I was 16. I now work for a large corporation at 23 years old where I am now unhappy and no longer feeling secure with my career. Everything is being outsourced to India and other foreign countries to save money, and our department’s tasks and projects that I love and take pride working on are depleting rapidly. I have been on the job hunt for 6 months now, but I cannot find a position. My resume is either sent to a black hole with thousands of other considered applicants, or when I do hear back- it’s a great interview— until I explain my job experience at an enterprise level. I have applied for HUNDREDS of jobs in August alone. I am being told left and right I have “too much experience for the position, and they’re looking for someone to stay for the long run”. I explain that I am in this for a career, not just a job and genuinely enjoy what I do, and the employers that I interview with feel I would end up bored.
I did try to apply higher up in more “advanced” IT and developer roles that I may or may not qualify for, but then again- I get more of a black hole here than anything.
I’m only 23 years old, on my own, and I am scared to death. I’ve been lucky to get work with so much experience and a great portfolio (no degree, but many applicable certifications), but now nobody wants to hire me at all. When our department is completely moved out of country, I don’t know what I’m left with... Am I on the right website to explore options here?

Has anyone had this problem. You nail the interview but, your too old to get hired. I am qualified for positions but, I have been on 5 interviews. Out of the 5 interviews, three of the interviewees were 20 years younger. I am 49, I didn't think that is too old, but, if your manager is going to be in her 30's , she might be intimidated. Or maybe I am overqualified. Praying hard. Anyone else experience this???

I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this problem? When I was young and in high school, I was always taught that if you can build up your experience it'll pay out in the end no matter what. I'm really not seeing this at all...as a matter of fact, I'm seeing my career go backwards and not forwards. I'm willing to take the truth even it if it hurts. I often look back and ask myself, where did I go wrong or where did I fall short? I showed up every day on time, did whatever it took to get the job done, met my deadlines with outstanding work and NEVER took advantage of anything there. I'm learning that just because you have years of experience, doesn't exactly mean you're qualified for the job, it means that you're over qualified? This is where I struggle to understand that my years of experience in this field of graphic design is basically obsolete or it really does count and it gets you into a huge disadvantage when competing for a position. Either way, if you have years of experience in certain specialized fields, it seems as if it can be your worst nightmare or enemy. I understand life isn't fair but I've worked way too hard to get where I'm at to find out that everything I've worked my tail end off for ISN'T gonna pay off in the end.
I'm running out of time...I don't have time to start over at minimum wage either. No way. Does this sound familiar?

With all these jobs out there, is there any way to "underqualify" yourself if someone were to say you're overqualified? I don't want to reduce or increase the years of research experience I have under my belt, otherwise, I would see myself as a fraud. For some positions that require up to 10 yrs of experience, what type of person are they looking for? Thanks in advance.
