Everyday is a Special Day at 1199SEIU but the most Special Day to me was October 2, 2019. This day started out with over 200 of us having breakfast together in the conference room. Next we were Officially Sworn In as Newly Elected Delegates for a Three Year Term. As a Newly Elected Delegate my position allows me to serve over 5000 Personal Care Attendants, Hosiptal Workers in several hospitals throughout the state of Massachusetts. Description: A delegate is a person selected to represent a group of people in some political assembly of the United States. There are various types of delegates elected to different political bodies. Wikipedia Here is my story how it all unfolded. It started in May 2019 while talking to a coworker about an issue he was dealing with at work. Needing guidance and advice relating to his issue, I called our union representatives for information? They said they were working on assigning someone to the case. I ended up assisting my coworker with his issue and won a positive ending of his issue. As we were leaving the H.R. hearing and my friend excited he challenged me to run for the delegate position? The new election was already in motion since January 2019. And two current delegates running for re-election my mind started running like crazy. I went to my union office and took out the nomination papers. Reading them I had less than three weeks to gather 250 union member signatures to qualify for the election. As a single dad with two girls ages eight and eleven. I took them to the shoe store to purchase three pairs of shoes. We then headed door to door, hospital to hospital to obtain the required signatures. This meant finding people I never met or knew before this challenge. Five days later and 437 signatures, I walked in to my union hall with the required paperwork and turned it in, the clerk was shocked by my results. I qualified as a candidate for Southeastern Massachusetts Delegates Elections. That night was another interesting memory. All of a sudden I received telephone calls from union members telling me they heard about me and are supporting me. Keep in mind Before this I just went through a nasty divorce and not so good of a year. The best part of my divorce is me being awarded my two daughters. The election was held in September 2019, out of 4000 voting members I received 3,406 official votes to unseat the current delegate. In short I WON the election and not only that I obtained the most votes in any previous election held in the union! I was sworn in October 2, 2019 as the new Elected Delegate for 1199 SEIU Southeastern Massachusetts. The picture shows me taking my oath of office on October 2, 2019! If I can do it, You can too Are You Ready for Change 2020? Thank you to each who have taken the time to read my story and My Best Day of 1199 SEIU !
Sincerely, Michael Carvalho 1199 SEIU Delegate of Southeastern Massachusetts
