Are you applying to job after job with no responses, or even worse, you get immediately rejected? If so, it's time to update your resume.

If you are applying for a job online, an Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) is immediately vetting your application. Follow these steps if you want to #BeatTheMachines.

  1. Keywords are the key - Look for the skills that come up more than once in a job description, paying particular attention to keywords mentioned near the top of the job requirements and job duties. Make sure these words are in your resume.

  2. Tie keywords to your accomplishments - Your resume should include examples of past successes and achievements. This is where you use the keywords.

  3. Keep things simple and standard - ATS systems love standard, easy-to-read resumes. Microsoft Word documents (in .doc or .docx format) are the most ATS friendly document to use. Use this resume template to beat the machines.

  4. Spell out abbreviations - The machines don't like acronyms.

  5. Always check your spelling - The machines spellcheck, so you'd better too.
