This is only my opinion but number one is knowledge of the piece of equipment you're on and what kind of work you're doing if you're moving if you're moving Earth it's bouncy and its rugged on your body if your running an excavator you just have to know you're piece of equipment and ground you're working on do you have the mentality sit in one spot in one are you work space for 12 hours

Learn how to read blueprints and how things are built now you are on the ground floor read all of the books you can find and try and find someone that could mentor you.

I like working as a hands on safety professional for them. I didn't like a 11-12 hour night shift 13 days in a row without end as a salaried exempt worker. The pay was nothing to write home about either given the hours worked.
Look for skills needed that ur dam good at. Not have done them a few times and pretty sure u can but know when u hit Apply now that u cab do the job ona ur worse day. Cause as an operator. It dnt take a supervisor long to see if u can do the job or not..
