Okay so I got hired by AAA Companies (AAA = Anytime, Anywhere, Anything) This company basically either does construction, maintenance, or contracts out to vendors for work that needs to be done. I was given the job of AP/Data Entry Clerk. This company did a direct temp hire, meaning my working relationship with this company was temporary (pending background check and evaluation of my work done while there) I had found the job on zip recruiter. Being in an "At will work state (California) it was iffy at best if I was going to get to stay. I had been there two and a half weeks, and everyone was super nice, my supervisor was a real nice gal, and my boss seemed like a real nice guy. I was given literally 2 days of training. Day 3 I got told if I didn't put in 50 entries, I was going to be let go. Mind you I had only been there three days. On day 5 I was told that I should be cranking out 120-150 entries a day. Just a bit of a history - The previous girl who worked there, left them with literally 400 emails in that email box, like a month of or so of invoices that needed to get done. - So I get in there and in 2 and 1/2 weeks being there, knocked that inbox down to 60 emails, and those emails were the ones that came in THAT DAY. I thought I was doing great. Next thing I know they canned my ass saying I wasn't fast enough, that it wasn't working out. to add insult to injury, they brought in a temp from a actual temp agency to take over for the supervisor so the supervisor can go on a vacation for three weeks. She has been there a week and still doesn't know how to do everything and I knew how to do everything. They told me that when the sup comes back they are letting that temp go too.
I know this is a normal part of life, but I think that it was a waste of time and resources to bring someone in just to catch up on your work load when your AP clerk literally cannot handle the work load and then cast that person aside, because hey great y'all are caught up. Cause guess what, when you knock it down to that one person again, its going to get out of control and when it does its going to get worse trying to train a second or third person and by the way 2 days of training to do AP work is NOT enough time. The things involved are complex and 2 weeks is NOT enough time to learn a complicated system like CF Structure, FYI the data base CF Structure? Is NOT user friendly and I still had trouble with it.
50 entries a day I can see as a min. But when half our vendors aren't giving us PO sheets, PO numbers or job numbers and then I have to sit there and go through every open PO just to find the one that matches the invoice, which takes 5-10 minutes and we are NOT allowed to call our vendors or call anyone to get that info outside of the office. Even the temp was like, at best 70 entries a day is about all you can get from a person realistically. I was doing on average 50-60 a day and that was just catching up, which also included pulling invoices for the utilities and basic business expense/maintenance and making sure that got paid.
I wasn't being slow either. I was having to spend a good portion of my time trying to get the information I needed to get the invoices entered into the system. When they let me go right when the work was caught up and the gal could take over the duties herself, I honestly felt used. I came in early, I stayed late the entire time getting all that work caught up, just to be let go? It is the worst feeling in the world. At the very lest I should have been given on the other positions that were open in house. At the very lest. It would have been nice to have been rewarded for bending over backwards for a company despite only being there for 2 1/2 weeks.
