Great article from Fast Company on the Gig Economy...
"The gig economy has been on the rise for several years, and many reports point to a continued trend in American workers taking on both side gigs and cobbling together a living from a hodgepodge of short-term work or longer-term contracted jobs.
Findings from Adobe revealed that as many as one-third of the 1,000 U.S. office workers they polled had a second job and more than half (56%) predicted we would all have multiple jobs in the future. The annual report from Upwork and the Freelancers Union found that more people than ever are choosing to freelance, up to 55 million this year, or 35% of the total U.S. workforce. As many as 81% of traditional workers they surveyed said they would "be willing to do additional work outside of [their] primary job if it was available and enabled [them] to make more money."

All throughout the posts people complain about not having a job and not being able to find a job. What is a job? Who makes jobs? Who hires people to perform jobs? PEOPLE. PEOPLE MAKE JOBS AND HIRE OTHER PEOPLE TO DO JOBS. ....so if you can't find another person to work for, then you person create the job. Get off your butt and create something. I'm not talking about art , music blah blah. I'm also not talking about blogging or starting some stupid scheme where you get other people to get other people to get other people......I am talking about you Walter, Dave, Jessie, Amanda, whoever you are, look at yourself and say what can I do that other people either can't do or don't want to do. Here's a list of stuff people don't want to do taxes, raise kids, watch kids, clean their house, cut the lawn, paint their house, fold clothes, make dinner, walk the dog study for test, pay their bills, be fat, be skinny, be ugly, be alone, drive themselves, write, draw, and this is only the surface. Times have changed. To start a business you don't need to get buy a building and do all that uncle SAM stuff. All you have to do is do it. Whatever it is. Go to the library and make some free business cards on brothers.com and work! Network yourself. Ironically, you'd be willing to do all this and more for someone else but can't do it for yourself. And for those MASTER DEGREES out there teach!!!!!! Go to those rich schools where the parents pay all that money for their kids to be successful. And you tutor them. You have masters degree. You are smart and you are exactly where they want their kid to be. Use preppy voice and sound smart and get paid.

i decided to go into the studio and record an album that was retro. i had the time to do this because the 'conventional job market' seems to regard me as a fossil from a by gone era. so if you don't have a job, you can do something you love. in the past i played in los angeles for years and NY for a time. my cd is called 'north of yesterday' it's on amazon and cd baby and you can listen for free on utube. everytime someone plays your song whether they like it or not, you get a small royalty. if you want extra pocket money, you can fill out surveys on your email and get paid 2.- 8 dollars per survey and it never takes longer than 5 minutes. if anyone is interested, you can contact me and i'll give you the email if you like.

I am currently unemployed with part of what I need to start the home business that I have always wanted to. But I need more tools to make that happen and was wondering if any on here might know of any actual grants to apply for that will help with start up costs of under $5,000.

When I realized the reason I was being rejected from fields where I performed like a superstar, it cut deep. But to cut to the chase, I am reversing and responding to this "blow below the belt" which is "ageism". Keep your call center floors, your sales floors, your concierge positions, ect..., I regrouped and responded by putting myself into the self employment arena. I do private housekeeping, for a few very affluent couples on a regular basis, and my life, my emotional health, and my confidence took a very positive turn. I am in the process of starting an online business, and as well as going through the steps to become a notary. I am at Peace and am slowly returning to the happy person that I naturally am. I made good money in the conventional work arena, and at times I wonder if I should attempt to return to the maddening career I ran from. But, I am absolutely appreciating myself for making a bold decision to move out of a degrading state of affairs due to the generation not appreciating, respecting , nor coexisting with mature co-workers. Hey youngsters, you don't deserve my positivism in your work place. The work force is yours, you own it and you can have it. I will never expose myself again to the insanity. I will never apply for positions with companies that judge me, and hold against me the beauty of being of mature age. You dare hold my age against me? I leave you to your ignorance. Blessings to all my mature brothers and sisters out there who are disrespected and insulted by the onslaught of "ageism". You'll find a way around this abomination and win. I have faith in all of us. Sincerely, Shela

Good morning everyone. I am not here to seek adivce. I am basically here to vent about my frustrating job search to replace the job I lost in October. I see many of you in this room have experienced the same thing so you all know where I am coming from. Long story short I am a tractor trailer driver and because of an accidental fuel spill I was terminated from my last job. The spill was the result of my leaving the pump unattended. Since then I have been applying and called in for interviews to no avail. The frustrating part is one job expressed a desire to having me come in for a road test. He told me to check my email for a date and time. I did so for almost a week and saw nothing from the company. So I called the woman in Chicago who set up the interview and she told me he emailed her telling her he hired someone else for the position. Would've been nice if he told me that don't you think? I haven't even been able to land jobs via temp agencies. Bad huh? I did take a road test with a company about three weeks ago and was told they would process my application but still haven't heard from them. Poor communication skills I'd say. Well while browsing through my email one day I ran across a bit of advice telling the reader not in so many words to explore new horizons. Try entrepreneurship or returning to school. I took this and my poor job search as a sign saying perhaps I should end my 15 year tenure as a tractor trailer driver and try something else. Well I did. I use my car to drive for Uber and its great. I make my own hours and make good money. Plus I' m seeking to do my passion of cartooning. I have a degree in fine arts and theatre and will be going back to school shortly to get a higher degree. Plus I am going to give at the disagreement of a friend home based business a try. Hey what have I got to lose by trying huh? Just wanted to share that the job search was like trying to catch fish without bait but all was not lost for me and all is not lost for you. There are several ways you can pay your bills. You just can't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
