So, you've been sitting at the computer all day, pounding out resumes. You've stretched, refilled your coffee 3.5 times, and took the dog out twice. Now you've reached a point where if you don't get hits on your resume, and the distractions don't stop and the dog quit whining and the kids....well, you'll just scream. So what do you do?
Me personally, I go for trail runs in the mountains around Mt. Rainier, and once the avalanche danger is over, then up Mt. Rainier. I also lift weights. I may also do a long, cleansing, satisfying road run.
Experts tells us that when we are looking for work, and going through stressful times, it's important to remember the basics.
- Do something for fun. Of course if you haven't got the coin, then it's "no mon, no fun". So it can't be something expensive or wasteful. I'm always a proponent of reminding people what my parents often told me: "Go play outside", and I just love it when people turn off the tv, get off the couch and head outdoors to play. You don't have to run. You can walk. You can hike. You can play frisby or catch with someone...something. We probably shouldn't burn the day since the phone might ring or you might get an email...but take a couple of hours to burn off some steam, then come back to it.
Run errands. If you have a cell, you can get one of those blue tooth ear thingys and remain in touch while you take care of other business.
Watching a movie or tv, or playing a game online isn't generally recommended since you are still staring at a screen, somewhat stationary. Listening to music as you patter about the house doing chores is somewhat better, but you still have the same surroundings. We need an occasional change of scenery.
You will know if you've done the time in your job search, that justifies a break from the pursuit. So, if you find the letters blurring on the page, and you are slouching in the chair feeling weak and dysfunctional, clinging to hope with diminishing strength, go play outside. We didn't lose the need just because we grew up.
