So I worked 11 to 8 last night and the two managers decided to get into an argument in front of customers and that caused one supervisor to leave along with her boyfriend who is also an employee. that left us short handed like nothing I've ever seen and caused me to have to stay until 930. I know it's good for my check but should I really be doing a supervisor shift because one of them can't do their job? Totally unprofessional and messed up for them to leave us high and dry like that . I hope she gets reprimanded. And I hope I get a raise for picking up everyone's slack the past week.

I don't understand how I can get employers to pay attention to my college training and experience. I have a degree as a Medical Administrative Assistant and a degree in Education. I'm working on obtaining my Bachelor's in English with a Minor in Education. I've applied as a Teacher's assistant and Instructional Aide at two different schools. I've had an interview with the former and I'm still waiting for the results. In the mean time, I'm still job searching. But most of the suggestions, if not all of them, look only at my experience as a cook. I'll take a food service job if it pays the bills, but that's not my end all goal in life here. It's got rather disheartening how most of the jobs being offered only require a High School diploma. I'm not putting down people who do that kind of work by any means, if you enjoy that sort of work then kudos to you. But life's too short not to be happy. So how do I get less of the "food service" suggestions, and more suggestions for clerical/secretarial or administrative type work? How do I get employers to pay attention to my college experience instead of just my work experience when I have no interest in going back to those kind of roles? Like I said, I'll settle for food service right now to pay the bills, but life's too short to be unhappy. No offense but I'm getting tired of suggestions like "McDonalds" or "Burger King." If you like that sort of work that's fine, but I know it's not for me. I don't want to waste my time or a future employer's time with a job I won't like, but like I said, I'll take any job over nothing.

Hi guys,

I'm new here. I am job searching at the moment, and was contacted via linked in by a recruiter for a tech company in my area. She said it's a 1 year contract position with high chance of conversion. I am 29 and I have never worked a contract position before and am not really familiar with how they work. How far ahead of time do they let you know whether they will be keeping you on? It's good pay, I am just nervous about taking a position like that where I am not guaranteed to keep the job after the year is up. Opinions?

Going into a job for slightly less money I was told don’t worry after only 21 days I would get a review. Trying to be optimistic I held onto what the supervisor told me an bit the bullet for the three weeks. Come time nothing was said. I gave it a week trying to look at things on both sides of the coin and mentioned something. “Oh ya I was busy and just got caught up”. I let it be. For 2 more months nothing had been said to me! Finally I had had it an just recently I said something again. Literally same excuse but ensured me “ya we will sit down this week”. All wk goes by guess what...nothing. “Hey we never sat down last wk”. “ Ur right we didn’t did we, ha ha (weird nervous habit laugh) I’ve just been busy and got a lot going on, we gotta do it during non-business hrs” um what? That’s the only time I’m at work is during “business hrs”. I don’t just need to have a review about my job. I’d never claim to be the perfect employee but him and I both know as far as my performance I’m doing just fine so the review itself is not the issue it’s the increase that he cannot own up to giving me. Puzzling me as to the real reason for the constant leading on

I just started a new position last week. I had been looking for work for 6 months. I didn't have a lot of faith in finding a new one, but I did. I am 73 years old and have been a bankruptcy Paralegal for close to 30 years. I am working for a creditor now instead of debtors in their legal/bankruptcy department. For all of you out there looking, don't give of hope. Like I said, I am 73 years old and got a high paying fantastic job. Good luck to all.

Hi I need some advice from experienced dental assistants, or even anyone that may give some advice. I will try to make this short even though it seems hard because I have so many things going on at the same time.

I have been a dental assistant for 15 years with a gap of 5 years unemployed because I was ill with an autoimmune disease. I was finally able to get Job as a dental assistant still getting paid the same I made 8 years ago I’m content considering the situation. My dilemma is that where I work there is no room or opportunity for growth, no benefits just paid 2 weeks vacation and sick days. We get free dental treatments, that’s about it.

I did some research and found out that my pay is way below average for my years of experience in the area I work at. I feel unappreciated by my coworkers, there is a lot of animosity is the clinic, and I believe this is because we are all women no man here. I really enjoy working with the female doctor I work with, she is the nicest dentist I have ever worked with, but her staff is ruining it for me as I am the new one here and the manager doesn’t like me. I’m still employed because the doctor owns the clinic and I sense she appreciates my assistance.

I feel torn between several feelings of wanting to grow and move on, and the fear of trying a career change that I may later regret and or not be able to accomplish because of my language barrier. I can’t afford to go to college as my daughter is soon going to college and my husband and I just bought a home, beside I’m so pass the curve for college. I’m at a 7th grade math and language level to give you an idea, as my first language is Spanish.

I thought about getting some training for nitrous sedation and maybe taking a course in Billing and coding to make myself more appealing to employers, but I realized that my career choice has a pay limit and may be shooting myself by adding more skills that would add more work for me in the future and never get paid more than a certain amount.

What would you advise for me be. I realize that wherever I go it will be the same office environment because dental offices are full of women mainly and my previous experience with male doctor never went well. I hate the “good old boys club” environments and to me it’s something I would never want to go back to.

Sincerely feeling hopeless.

I have worked retail merchandiser jobs for many years. And owned my own small business for 26 years. When the economy tanked in 2008, I struggled and kept my flower shop open until 2014. Then went back into the workforce working for other small business owners. Recently, I was laid off after 2 years at a small ladies boutique. The owners were a husband and wife team. I had an alergic reaction to medication at home on a Saturday and went to the emergency room. My husband had my cell phone and the lady business owner was texting me abt a work question. My husband explained what had happened. I asked if I could leave early for a follow-up appointment w my doctor and she said to take the day off. So this is where it gets very strange....as I pull into the parking lot of the clinic, both of my bosses pull in next to me to accompany me into the doctor. I thought this was extremely odd? But what was I suppose to say to them? Thankfully they waited in the waiting room. I then had to be referred to a cardiologist for high blood pressure. That following Sunday night, I get a text message from my boss saying, " you can not come into work on Monday, b/c of your medical condition". I texted back what? I had all ready received determination as to what had happened, and was going to explain that to them on Monday when I was scheduled at 9:00 am. Then my cell phone rings. It's the two of them, slurring there words, they had been drinking all day w an attorney friend. They then proceeded to tell me that if I came into work, I would "fake" a fall off a ladder and it would become a "workman's compensation" claim. I said excuse me??? This happened at my home on my day off and that I would never do that. And I asked several times, why couldn't we talk about this during "normal" working hours on Monday?? My husband works construction, so we both know how that works. They were belegerent and accused me of doing that repeatedly. I knew they we're drunk and hung up. They called me from 10:00 pm at night until 1:00 am on Monday morning. Six different times. They even called my husband who is working out of state and told him the same thing. That I would do this. I was in shock! I have never heard such bad behavior from anyone like this. As I was a small business owner for several years, I would have never accused an employee of doing this OR calling them late at night and continually harrassing them. I am now so Leary of working for anyone. I have lost faith in business owners, and crossing the line. Who does this? I worked for them for two years, recieves several raises, took care of the buying, book keeping, banking, and day to day operations. I recently was advised to file a complaint w the state b/c this is medical discrimination. I just want to put it out there, it is a two way street. Respect goes both ways, and business owners do need to be careful with there actions. So dissapointed. I loved this job and would have stayed for a lifetime.
