In several ways, mainly to realize that people are different and need to be taught differently. Some children came from dysfunctional family backgrounds and had little self esteem. These kids needed different approaches to both succeed and improve the self esteem and believe in themselves, and be proud to be a part of something good. Some came to us very spoiled and self centered. These kids were some of the hardest to reach and to teach them to work with others so all team members could succeed. We also had disabled Kids, autistic kids, crippled kids, one who was legally blind. These kids were never chosen by any teams because of these situations, So they wound up playing for my teams. We, as a team, had varying successes, but improved every year from where we started. The thing that I'm most happy about for my kids is that they learned that winning wasn't everything, and that being a good person made good things happen. This was before " Participation Trophies". I still hear from some of my kids today, and I'm proud of the people they've become, in spite of me.

Something I learned at #Kennebunk,K'port,MeLittleleague,K&KYouthFootball,Wells,MePeeWeeandYouthFootball,(Coaching),Kennebunk,MeSecretSantaprogram,ToysforTots,Kennebunk,MeFoodPantry. ...
Teaching Kids ( and sometimes parents) how to become respectful to others, how to share with others, the importance of learning to work with others, teamwork for success, willingness to put the team before self interests, how to work as a team to accomplish goals, taking care of their equipment, tried to prepare them to become successful adults, by example. The actual sport was the easy part.

Excellent and busy with the Programs for sports teams. Secret Santa Program only lasts about 6 weeks per year, some days are very busy and some not so busy, but there is always something to do if you look for things to do for the program. Toys For Tots is multi-faceted, Picking up donated toys/ clothing at various drop off points, delivering to central locations, separating and warehousing by sex and age, assisting parents with children's needs, either with toys, clothing or both. Kennebunk Food Pantry involved submitting detailed reports regarding the number of families we served, number of persons per family, and other statistical information, Picking up food from central location, separating and making food packages based on number of folks in each family, carrying and loading food for elderly (especially in Winter when slippery conditions existed). My wife was Kennebunk's Social Services Director and needed help with the Food Pantry, so I was recruited. We did this twice a month until her retirement.

How I started volunteering at #Kennebunk,K'port,MeLittleleague,K&KYouthFootball,Wells,MePeeWeeandYouthFootball,(Coaching),Kennebunk,MeSecretSantaprogram,ToysforTots,Kennebunk,MeFoodPantry.
Began with my children's sports, was asked to stay once they outgrew the programs. As for the Wells programs, my Grandchildren played in Wells sports programs, I knew the folks from Wells from coaching against them. They needed coaches and asked me to come on board.
