All construction is basically the same, what you want to express is to learn the way they (the company you’re applying for) want you to do it. All companies have their own way they want their jobs done. Having an eye for detail is a nice touch too. Make sure you start and end interviews with a firm handshake and keep eye contact during interviews.
Long hours. No life work balance.
The most challenging part for me was handling entitled customers that felt they were right in spite of posted safety rules, what was considered prohibited items, etc.

Unauthorized Semi-Truck Parking
I was reading an article about a Greyhound bus colliding with a semi-truck on July 12 killing three people and injuring 14 in Highland, Illinois. This was the result of a semi-truck parking on an exit ramp which is unauthorized parking and cannot be used as a rest area. DOT regulations have strict rules that prevent truck drivers from driving past 16 hours or they’ll receive a citation and penalty for breaking this rule. With this rule in place “Over the Road” OTR drivers tend to just pull over on the highway and rest for 8 hours which is illegal. 🚫
Apparently the state of Illinois does not have enough rest areas for truck drivers. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating this accident to determine how they can prevent tragedies like this in the future. Although I’m not an OTR driver, from my personal experience truck rest areas are very difficult to find and can be really spread out making it a hassle for drivers looking to rest, fuel up, and put air in their tires if they need to. 🚛
If you’re a new driver, I recommend improving your time management skills, navigation skills, and organizational skills so you can minimize any possible dangerous situations like this. Know your routes and rest areas along the way. You can utilize apps like “TruckMap” that will provide you with truck routes, rest areas, scale locations, and other features that are useful for truck drivers. On the job. The employer is the best way for you to get certified for the position of room inspection. Certificates are obtained from a classroom for the interested.

Stand-Up Forklift
This is a video of how to operate a stand-up forklift. Stand-up’s are used to pick orders or replenish inventory. They increase production because operators don’t have to jump on and off the lift to pick items. They also maximize safety for the operator preventing any long term health problems from jumping on and off the lift.
I operated this lift for 10+ years, but the way I learned was jumping on a stand-up during my lunch break when no one was around. They are very difficult to operate if you don’t have any proper training. If you learn how to operate a stand-up you can pretty much get a job at any warehouse that picks orders using a stand-up. Wages are pretty decent as well so I recommend learning this piece of equipment if you are working in a warehouse.
