I recently relocated from Monterey, CA to Reno, NV and am in search of employment. Over the years I have acquired many skills, some of which are specialized. My time spent gathering, refining, creating and manipulating data for visual and analytical purposes provided skills and experience applicable to any discipline. I am able to effectively communicate with people of various backgrounds and work well within deadlines. I have an acute attention to detail and think creatively. More important than my confidence applying my skills, is my confidence building and expanding upon them. My passion, work ethic, and experience make my employment a mutual investment which I am eager to partake in.

This is a great little summary reminder of how important communication skills are for you to increase your earnings and your progression in your worklife! Doesn't matter what you do - being able to succinctly communicate well is key (and often takes practice). Find a Dale Carnegie speakers course, take some online writing courses, lots you can do these days to tighten up - but it will really pay off. Also - never email when you can call; never call when you can meet. Its always better to increase the human interaction to achieve success in whatever you are trying to accomplish in your communication!!

I have seen so many jobs like that. you meet all the requirements but that one they are looking for. I have run into so many of those and its a disappointment.

Take a class or study up. I know what you mean. Or go to library and get a book to learn from. Tell them you are willing to learn.

What skills do I need to get a job without a degree?

Sometimes skill sets are like those hidden picture puzzles., For instance you view your work experience as the big picture but there are hidden treasures that you don't automatically see. Think outside the box, often we have skills that we don't recognize as skills such as, with this economy you may find that you have a talent for managing a budget, parents are often great mediators, and those that are caregivers have the patience of Job. What skills do you have that you are overlooking? Make a list of the things you do daily and those things love to do (chances are you excel at it) what skills are used? Ask others to help by listing the qualities they see. Think how those qualities can be used in an employment environment and list them as part of your skill set.

I found this helpful article that might shed some light on areas you can work on during your job search. The list applies to any industry, and each entry has some links to resources to help you improve in case it isn't your best skill.

Hi Debbie, Are you following up on your applications by calling the companies you apply at? This is a great step to take, first to make sure they received your application, and also for you to see what the status of it is. Hope this helps!
