I went on an interview on Monday with a company for an Administrative Assistant position, and I happened to talk to a friend of mine who interviewed with the same company and I'm seeing several red flags based on the conversation.

  1. I was originally contacted for a sales position - 50+ hours a week - working 6 days. Low pay but commission promised. Couldn't work the days they wanted and told the agency that. They agreed to submit my resume with those stipulations.
  2. Was called to do an interview for an Administrative position at higher pay. Agreed to the interview. When I got there, the manager immediately said he wanted me for the sales position, and I informed him I was interviewing for the Administrative position, not the sales position as that was not my area of expertise.
  3. Was told by the agency the company had been open about a month, and they were looking to fill positions. Found out from my friend they already had been open 3 months and were desperate for sales people but weren't using an agency. Job was again 6 days a week - averaging less than $12/hr. All cold calling and internet sales on a very niche specific market with no guarantee of commission unless you made 8 sales or more a month. Once you made the 8 sales, you got $100 commission. The sales average around 35K each.
  4. When my friend was interviewing for the administrative position, the hiring manager immediately pulled the same bait and switch and wanted to push the sales position. Told her there was no administrative assistant position as the sales person was going to have to do both jobs.Yet that's what they were advertising on the web.
  5. From what she remembered, he refused to discuss benefits, etc. at the interview, and stressed that it was 6 days a week - all weekends and you could possibly start rotating weekends after 6 months if they hired enough sales people.
  6. She spent 30 minutes in the interview and still left feeling like they didn't click. She left and never returned his phone call she received a few weeks later.

I'm wondering if my agency is even aware of the way the company operates, and if I should say anything. This is one of four agencies I am registered with and only the second interview ANY of them have sent me on. I don't want to sound like I am whining to them, because I had immense problems getting them to return a call in the first place after I applied, but I feel like the manager is misleading both his applicants and the agency in what he is offering. Thoughts?

I applied to ProLogistics through JobCase and to say they brought me in for orientation. It may only be a little over minimum wage and a temp agency to start but it's a paycheck, (I start my shift tomorrow) something I haven't seen in a loonng time. Thank you JobCase. And thank you, fellow JobCasers for your encouragement and for the privilege to help you as well. Yes, I will continue to look for better. Keep your heads up, and your proverbial feet moving. Remember, looking for a job should be your job, overtime includes. You can do it.

I am not sure how the penalties work with temp agencies. My contract ended on the 31st of. January. I was not paid for the last 8 hours. My rep finally got back to me today saying I wasn't paid and should be paid by Friday. Also my sick time that I requested for was not processed because there was a "backlog" and should come to me the following Friday. Is ANY OF THIS LEGAL?

I'm not hearing back from employers. I am currently working with XLC Services which is Temporary Service. I have been with them for about 2 years but I need more money and job security. Whenever they get a call for a reference, I get called into the office and they say that they don't want me to leave because I am their best employee and that they are going to fight for me to stay. I just don't understand why I rarely get a call back from employers.

I am working as a temp at a law firm. I spoke with my agency and told them some concerns I had. After we spoke they called the client I am working for , telling them exactly what I said. Down to the time we talked, all the emails that were exchanged, EVERYTHING... They basically ruined my name. After hearing all this the client now says she's not sure if she wants to hire me. What can I do?

Finally, some positive news for you! I didn’t think it was possible, but after months and months of looking I’ve finally landed a great job as a receptionist! I’m so thankful for the temp agency that placed me here, because now it has become a permanent position. I love organizing and greeting people when they walk in, and it feels so good to finally have a sigh of relief because I have something stable. I just feel so blessed. Keep going everyone, even if you have to temp your way to a full-time position - it’s worth it!

I had been signed up with Kelly svcs and I had one temp job thru them that ended starting the second week in December. Then all they were calling about were jobs an hour and half away. They were an hour away from their office. I contacted them asking why they were only sending me info on those jobs. I asked about any jobs in ft worth or arlingtin(where the office is located). Their answer well we don't usually handle any jobs in those areas you would have to call a ft worth office. Really. I said applied in Arlington because it was centrally located for the job areas I was looking for. They had no answer. So after New Years I decided to try an agency that was 10 mins away. I went in talked to them. After they had all the info on my background check they would call me. So a few days later I called and was told that oh I was to call them. And that I needed to call 2 times a week to stay active. So when a job came thru they would start with who kept calling. Again really who has time to keep calling the same place all the time.

So that weekend I saw another temp agency in close proximity on the same street just in a different direction. It was called express professional employees. Thought that they might have office work. Got dressed up like a professional and applied. Once you applied they schedule an interview with one of placement agents. So I went back that Wednesday. They wanted me to work for their agency. They said they had a job right then that was a long term assignment. It's 2 mins from my house. I live in midlothian and it's a small town but we have an auto park (international). The cars coming off the boats come there before eventually going to a dealer. The job? I drive cars to the different lots there or go put gas in, wash, and then to the shop. I never leave the property while doing the job because it's 6 square miles. I work with the same people every day. A van takes to the cars, sometimes we are dropped in different lots but we end up same place. Van driver picks us up and off we go to another. We ride with the same driver and van every day. There's zero stress. No one is in the car with me telling to do one thing and another telling me to do something else. It's just me and the car. Tho I can't listen to music in the car, I'm not in it long enough to matter. If the weather is bad we just sit in the car if the van isn't right there. It's 8.50 an hour but it's perfect to supplement my disability retirement with.

So for my friends who are still job hunting keep going. Don't let the hiring people bring you down. If you need some extra income till the right job comes along don't be afraid to take some pitiful job you think is below your standards. Any money coming in is good and doesn't mean you can't keep looking. It truly is easier to get job if you have a job. And if your thinking temp work and the one you signed up with isn't getting you anything go to the next one and the next one till someone has one.

Good luck my friends

It has been almost a year since I've worked. I've applied to several job openings via the internet....signed up with several temp agencies and still no offers. I've applied for a position with Target, Macy, etc and I get the response that we've reviewed your resume, however, we've decided to pursue other candidates. My previous jobs were in the oil and gas industry....have talked with recruiters and I was told that employers are afraid to hire people like me because they can't afford to pay me what I was making with my previous job and also the fear that I will leave once the oil and gas industry is back. Wow....scrambling trying to figure out what is the next step.
