Ok, so what's rule #1 on resumes? It is simply: Remember what they are for.

They are to make the reader think they'd like to learn more about you and/or to meet you. That's it.

A good resume gets someone to call you to learn more. Period. Full stop.

They do NOT get you hired.
You do NOT need to tell every detail and life story.

You need to write it in summary form, with results and with the goal of wanting the reader to think: "that sounds really interesting, I'd like to learn more". If they think that - you win. Now you get to interview (in person or on phone) and thats when you fill in details and win the job.

Have a look at your Jobcase profile. Did you tell your story in an interesting way? Results? Shared community volunteering? Education that makes sense? Summary that generates confidence and questions to be answered? If so - great. Hit "generate resume" and you are good to go. If not, dress it up to present your best self forward. Employers search jobcase everyday. Everyday they reach out proactively to people about jobs. Make sure your profile and resume makes good employers "want to learn more"!!!!

With 22 employers, hundreds of attendees and a few hours - its important to spend your time right at the jobfair - AND to make that great first impression. spending a bit of time on preparation is key. Heres the basics:

  1. make sure to have at least 50 copies of your resume. (resumes generate automatically off of your jobcase profile - so just use our wizard to fill out your profile and hit 'generate resume' if you need a new one).

  2. have your elevator pitch ready and practiced (i.e. if you were on an elevator ride with someone for about 6 floors, what would you say to explain who you are and what you are looking for in your next opportunity - you'll say this a lot at a jobfair right after 'hello" so be sure to practice it out loud before you go).

  3. pick 5 of the companies attending and focus on them. Of course you can interview and stop by and talk to more, -but look up what your favorite5 are like on Jobcase company pages (glassdoor and indeed are good resources too - we incorporate those in our pages to make it easy for Jobcasers). Try to have 1-2 questions for each of these top 5 that are specific to them and their employer-employee relationship. Does Kroger provide upward advancement potential for entry level employees who do great work? Does Amazon help with transportation if its hard for me to get to Hebron KY (answer: they do right now!!!) Does UPS provide training and/or internal paths toward new positions after the entry level one., etc. The more the questions are about you providing more value to them, the better!

  4. Sell. Remember this is about you selling the best product in the world - you! (or really your working hours) but this is the chance to put your best self forward and connect the dots for them. If its a retail job, your close might be something like "I hope I have the chance to make sure your customers have an awesome experience when they shop' or whatever else you think links between what you think you are good at and what can benefit the company - add value to them! .

Jobcasers are awesome. You are awesome. You got this! Just do a little prep work, and next Tuesday should be a really successful day!
