Stay to yourself. There’s no such thing as friends in state service. Be careful.
Interview them just like they interview you and research the agency or department you’re applying for. Ask the escort that you meet for the interview questions. That’s a clue. Some do share. You may not want to work there as I was warned about my first state job. Don’t fear the interview panel. Not everyone who sits on the panel knows the job and they may even work in another unit all together. Be prepared and be yourself.
When the hiring and promotion opportunities were fair. Now they hire and promote people on likability and not the ability or skills to do the job. Illegal hiring in many agencies. 2000-2020

I volunteered my clerical talents at the CA Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation about five years ago. It was both a productive and fun place to volunteer. I'd work there as a salaried clerical employee without hesitation! Wonderful people there. #inspiration
