How to start a Hot Shot business
Here’s a video of how to start a Hot Shot business. 🚛
Keep in mind a CDL will more than likely be needed because anything that weighs over 25,000 lbs requires a CDL. 🪪
This is a great business if you want to earn passive income. You can definitely hire someone to drive for you while you go on and work on other projects or even your day job. ✅

Steps to get your Class A or B CDL
Here’s my monthly post on how to get your CDL if you’re interested in getting into the trucking industry. 🪪
These steps must be followed exactly the way I am explaining them or the process will be delayed. ✅
The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence. 📚
After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask. 🏫

7 tips on how to become an owner-operator
Here are 7 tips on how to become an owner-operator. 💡
Understanding what an owner-operator entails. ✅
Have experience. ✅
Understanding the costs. ✅
Know how to generate revenue. ✅
Buy or lease a truck. ✅
Obtain proper documentation. ✅
Ask yourself. ✅
My personal opinion I would never become an owner-operator unless it’s hauling for the fuel industry. ⛽️ There’s a lot more money and less driving involved. You’re local and home every night. 🏡

Owner Operator vs. Company Drivers
Here’s a very informative video of owner operators and company drivers talking about the pros and cons they have experienced. 💭
As a truck driver myself, I prefer to be a company driver to avoid all the headaches that come with maintaining a semi-truck. Company drivers make just as much as an owner operator that includes benefits and vacation pay. California has also made it difficult for owner operators to make money as well so it’s best to keep up with your state laws. ✅

Super 10 vs. Super Tag
Here’s a YouTube video explaining the differences between a Super 10 vs. Super Tag. ✅
You only need a Class B license to operate both of these trucks. 🪪
When I first decided to get my CDL I wanted to operate a Super 10 because it looked easier. I went and got my Class A and decided to just drive semi-trucks because I wanted to work in the ports. 🚛
In the Los Angeles area the compensation to operate a Super 10 is generally $25 per hour. 💰

Class B Passenger Endorsement Test
If you’re not really all that enthusiastic about driving a semi-truck, you can always get a Class B with a passenger endorsement. 🚌 Bus drivers make pretty good money depending on who you work for. Getting a Class B CDL is also $1,500 cheaper than getting a Class A. 🪪
Here’s the 1st part of the DMV test. ✍️

Trucker GPS Apps
For you new drivers out there, it’s important to know what routes you can take when driving a tractor & trailer. 🚛 Going off truck routes can lead to a point on your DMV record and up to $1,000 fine. 💵
In February a Los Angeles County Sheriff from the “Commercial” unit pulled me over for going off the truck route. I was lucky to only get a violating a city ordinance for $230 and zero points on my DMV record. 👮♂️
Here are several GPS apps cater specifically to truckers, offering features tailored to the needs of commercial vehicle drivers. 🗺️
CoPilot Truck GPS provides truck-specific routing based on vehicle dimensions, weight, and load type, along with offline maps and real-time traffic information. ✅
Trucker Path features truck-optimized routing and navigation, detailed information on truck stops, rest areas, weigh stations, and fuel prices, as well as real-time updates on parking availability and traffic conditions. ✅
Sygic Truck GPS Navigation is designed for large vehicles with routes based on truck size, weight, and cargo type, and offers offline maps and real-time traffic updates, along with information on truck-specific POIs and restrictions. ✅
SmartTruckRoute delivers real-time truck routing based on vehicle dimensions and load type, providing live traffic updates and weather conditions, and featuring truck-specific points of interest and fuel price comparisons. ✅
Hammer offers truck-specific navigation with routes avoiding restricted roads and low bridges, including real-time traffic and weather updates, and allowing for multi-stop trip planning and fuel optimization. ✅
PTV Navigator provides truck-legal navigation with customizable routes based on vehicle dimensions, offline maps, and real-time traffic information, along with truck-specific points of interest and route planning tools. ✅
Route4Me is primarily a route planning app but offers truck-specific routing options, allowing for multi-stop trip optimization and route customization, and providing real-time updates and dynamic re-routing. ✅
These apps are available on both iOS and Android platforms and offer a range of subscription plans and features to cater to the specific needs of truckers. 📱

Doubles & Triples Test
Here’s a YouTube video that will help you study for the “Doubles & Triples” endorsement. 📝
California doesn’t allow for triples to be hauled, but places like Arizona and Texas do allow it. I recommend checking with your state laws. ✅
When I first got my Doubles & Triples endorsement, I thought I would never haul Doubles, but here I am 2 years later hauling Doubles. I must say it’s a lot easier to haul doubles then it is a 40ft trailer. With doubles you don’t need to make such wide turns like you would a 40ft, 45ft, or 53 footer. 🚛
I recommend just getting all your endorsements even if you convince yourself you don’t want to haul any of the endorsements. You never know when a great opportunity might fall into your lap that requires these endorsements. Better to have them ahead of time and be flexible for the next opportunity. ✅
