Yard Goat
Here’s a video of a driver demonstrating the basic functions of a Yard Goat. These tractors typically shuttle trailers to and from dock doors so employees can load and unload them. ✅
In order to operate a yard goat all you need is a Class C and in some cases a Class A CDL. A yard goat position can be difficult to land if you have no experience driving a tractor and trailer. These positions are normally handed to truck drivers that no longer want to drive on the road and want a normal work schedule so they can come home to their family every day. The yard goat position also allows retired truck drivers to maintain an active CDL. ✅

A Career in Warehouse Distribution
Here’s a video on what day to day operations are like in a warehouse distribution center. This is a great video because it demonstrates on what the training is like for an order filler. ✅
This video also shows all the career growth opportunities that will allow an employee to move up or lateral. One thing about the warehouse industry is that there are plenty of opportunities for career growth. Some companies will even provide tuition reimbursement for employees that want to earn a degree or certificate. ✅
I worked in the warehouse industry for 15+ years and I have to say that starting from the bottom can be grueling, but it can pay dividends if the company you work takes care of their employees. ✅

Roll-Off Truck
Here’s a quick video of a Roll-Off demonstrating how to load the container back on the truck. If driving an 18 wheeler is not for you, a Roll-Off might be. It’s easy money and not back breaking work. 🚛
All you need is a Class B CDL to drive this truck which is normally $1,500 to get at a trucking school. These drivers can make $25-$30 an hour depending on experience. These jobs are also a dime a dozen on Craigslist. You’ll never have to worry about being unemployed as a Roll-Off truck driver. ✅

What Kind of Truck Do You Need For The CDL Road Test
Here’s an informative video on what kind of truck you need for a CDL road test. This is a great video to watch because the instructor gets in detail if you decide to take your own truck for the DMV road test. 🚛
If you decide to take your own truck, keep in mind it needs to be over 26,000lbs for it to be considered a CDL test. ✅
If your truck doesn’t have air brakes, it’s fine but you’ll have a restriction on your CDL stating you cannot operate a vehicle with air brakes. ✅
If your truck is automatic, it’s fine you’ll just have a restriction on your CDL that you cannot operate a manual transmission vehicle. ✅
From my own experience as a commercial driver, it’s better to not have any restrictions on your CDL as a contingency plan. Keep in mind if you have a Class A, you can pretty much get a job anywhere in the country making six figures. So it’s better to pay the extra cost to make yourself more flexible and to create more options for yourself in the future. ✅

TWIC CARD
Here’s a video of how you can obtain a TWIC CARD. 🪪
The TWIC CARD is to gain access to high-risk areas and is highly recommended to get even if you don’t use it. There are lots of carriers that will put you at the top of the candidate list just for having a TWIC CARD. I have a TWIC CARD and use it to enter the Long Beach ports. 🚢
Here are the steps I took to get my TWIC CARD ⤵️
Paid $135 fee. ✅
Submit Identification documents and fingerprints to their local processing center which was a Staples when I did it. There’s a list for your area. ✅
Wait for my background check to clear. [I have a conviction for attempted murder from 2004 and I still received TSA clearance.] ✅
It took 3 weeks to get my background cleared and receive my TWIC CARD in the mail. ✅
(FN) I recommend applying for the TWIC CARD soon as you get your CDL in the mail. Once you pass a TSA background check, you are cleared to get your Hazmat endorsement after you pass a hazmat test. ✅

CNG Tractors
Here’s a video of how a “Compressed Natural Gas” tractor operates. Although these are rare, I do see these in the ports from time to time. 🚛
This was a fun video to watch and learn from. If you ever interview for a carrier that has a fleet of CNG’s only, I recommend watching a video like this so can extend your knowledge on this type of tractor. You’ll be able to have the upper hand by demonstrating you are aware of how a CNG functions, and show your enthusiasm for the company you are applying for. ✅

Southwire Company
Southwire Company is a great company if you are interested in working in the warehouse industry. I worked here from 2014-2017 as a Warehouse Specialist running copper and aluminum cable wire onto wooden reels. When I was working there, warehouse employees were making $65K annually. Southwire also paid for my two Business degrees and two professional certifications with their tuition reimbursement program. ✅
Southwire also likes to promote internally and posts job openings in their job board. They have facilities in California, Georgia, Texas, Missouri, Indianapolis, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. You can relocate to any of these facilities if you ever want a change of scenery. ✅
Southwire prides themselves on a safety culture and takes care of their employees when they are in need. I recall a time when an employee got into an accident on his motorcycle and when he came back to work, they gave him a $10,000 dollar check to help out with his bills. Southwire is a privately owned company that generates 6 billion in revenue annually so they like to pay their employees well because they want the best of the best to work for them. ✅
I recommend if you live near a Southwire facility, apply on their website. Any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to drop a comment. ⤵️

How to get a California CDL
Here’s a YouTube video on how to get a Class A if you’re interested in getting into the trucking industry. Although federal guidelines make most regulations mandatory across the board, some states may have a different process so be sure to research your state. 🪪
Here are the steps in a nutshell:
DOT Physical ✅
Written Test ✅
Obtain Permit ✅
Enroll in Trucking School or Get Employed by a Carrier will to provide paid training. ✅
Schedule DMV Appointment for Skills and Road Test. ✅
Obtain CDL. ✅
These are the 6 steps that I took to get my Class A. In this video the trucker mentions she didn’t know you needed a DOT physical to get a permit. That also happened to me so I had to reschedule my DMV appointment delaying the process. I couldn’t even take the exam without providing my medical certificate. Other documents I needed were my Birth Certificate, Driver’s License, Social Security Card, Two Utility Bills or Proof of Residency. ✅
The process also took my 3 months because of delays such as Covid. I also recommend that you don’t take any of the endorsements until after you get your CDL. 🚛

Electric Trucks
Here’s a video of the electric truck I use called the BYD. We are the first company to test these trucks in California. Apparently these electric trucks will be mandatory in the ports in 2027. I’m not sure how this will play out, but I believe it will have a negative impact on any company trying to implement them in their operations. 🚛⚡️
I spend the first two hours of my shift charging my trucks to get it to 100%. I’ve gotten stranded twice because my tractor wouldn’t go into drive because the pressure was to low. There is a support line to call, but the support line never answers. It also takes 40% of my battery life to travel 60 miles with a loaded trailer. Another 20-30 percent to drive back with an empty container. Some of these drivers barely make it back with only 13% battery life. 🪫
I can say this is really an interesting experiment this company is implementing. Although I’ve been experiencing negative results, it is fun knowing we are creating history here in California. ✅
