And this means having reasons beyond your own basic needs, like pay, commute time, or schedule. Don’t get me wrong, those things are very important, but they typically are important to everyone so they do not set you apart from every other candidate.

There are 0 good reasons for ever telling an interviewer (whom you likely JUST met) where else you are interviewing.
First, why is that information relevant? Interviewers should be focusing on their own companies and instead of worrying about your other potential opportunities.
Second, many industries are smaller than they appear and you don’t need anyone speaking to other people at other companies; possibly disrupting your search.
Third, it’s simply none of their business!
If you are asked this question in the future, simply state “I’m actively job searching,” and leave it at that.
Often, questions like these are used to gauge how fast a company will need to make you an offer or how aggressive they will have to be with a salary.
The content of these interviews (business meetings) should only be about your skills and experiences as well as the role and what your responsibilities will be so both you and the company can decide if the opportunity is a mutual fit.
A great way to stand out during your interviews is to ask high quality questions when the opportunity arises.
Every interviewer is different. Some will welcome questions early on, throughout the discussion, or at the very end.
Regardless of when you can ask questions, you want to bring 4-5 with you so you don’t stress about coming up with some during the interview. Just jot them down. No need to memorize.
If a company is public, skim through the latest annual report and the annual 10-K (especially the “Risk Factors” section) to formulate business questions to SHOW that you took the time to do research.
Additionally, for public or private companies, look at “News” and “Press Releases” on each company’s website to see what acquisitions they made, charitable work they are doing, new products that were rolled out, and so on.
Asking solid, thoughtful questions is a great way to utilize what is in your control to stand out from other candidates during your interviews.
Nerves are common. Nerves are healthy. You’re nervous because you care and want to do well.
However, there is a big difference between being a little nervous and having crippling nerves before an interview that can impact your performance.
So, why the nerves?
The uncertainty. Before most interviews, we don’t know:
A. The personalities of the people we will be meeting with. B. The exact questions we will receive.
There are 2 main ways to reduce interview nerves:
- Learn as much as possible about the company and the role from available sources.
- Practice answers to common interview questions, OUT LOUD, over and over again.
We can only control what is in our control, and those 2 things are very much in our control.
Whether a company is public or private, research ahead of time to gain familiarity and prepare yourself with good questions for the interviewer.
Practicing answers to common questions out loud will both allow those old stories and examples to come to the forefront of your mind which will then allow you to deliver responses in a calm and thoughtful way.
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding a job interview.
One way to alleviate some of the pressure and uncertainty is to rehearse your experience out loud.
Audibly answering common questions (even if you’re by yourself) will help you uncover any rough areas of your delivery and will also help you recall those stories you may not have thought about for many years.
Please don’t just “wing it” at the interview.

With difficult customers, I try to look at the situation like a crossword puzzle. There's a solution and it's my job to find it. If the customer is being a jerk, reduce the damage they are doing to other customers around them as much as you can, and help them get their business done quickly.
