Worked 30 yrs as a Lpn/Paramedic, loved it. Unfortunately, had a accident and while in Physical rehab nursing license lapsed. Currently disabled and looking for part time job. My disability does allow me to work maybe 10-20 hrs per week.

I was terminated from my job as a paramedic because I could not pass my DL51 Physical. My physical came due last month. I went into my ambulance company medical office for my biannual physical. I filled out my paper for the CDL physical, which is required for California, and marked down that I had epilepsy.

Well that was the wrong thing to do. The doctor told that I failed the physical immediately due to my epilepsy history. We I was told to leave and walked out. I contacted my employer at the time and they wanted to give me a temporary ADA accommodation, after I had asked for the paper for an ADA accommodation. This issue went on for a month, until they called me in on 10/16, with my separation papers on their desk.

They told they could no longer accommodate me. I and they offered me a dispatchers positions. They couldn’t tell me my pay grade or the training schedule. My response was that you had to have a EMT-D creditial prior to applying for this job. This was company policy. They told no, they would train me and I could take the test. I told them no, I want to be a medic and here is my accommodation, which is the process I wanted from the start! They refused me and I said you would have to fire me, because I’m not quitting. I was fired because I have epilepsy. I cannot acquire employment because I cannot obtain a DL51, which is wrong when you spend 100% of your time in the back of the ambulance.

Great place to gain experience as a primary care provider, but a higher burn out rating due to amount of calls and work place environment in general
