
Early on in my consulting career, I was eager to show my value and jumped at any opportunity for additional work that I could find. I put as much on my plate as I thought I could handle, thinking it would propel my career and show my managers I was ready for the next level.
But what actually happened is I got burned out, experienced higher levels of stress and anxiety, and eventually my work started to suffer.
When you accept task after task with no sense of priority or timeline, you set yourself up for failure. That's not to say you need to create artificial limits on what you can accomplish, but think through when something needs to get done, and prioritize high value, more immediate tasks first.
