You have an average of 18 seconds for your Resume to grab the attention of the hiring manager/recruiter. It has to be short and compelling. Important information needs to be near the top. #resume #togetherwecan #abledworkersunite

Imagine if the Disability Community all came together with one voice. That is at least 1 in 5 people worldwide. That is @1.6 billion people demanding Accessibility, Equity, and Complete Inclusion. Imagine! How then could we be denied? We cannot! Anything is possible if we imagine it. #disability #jobs #onevoice #togetherwecan

To have total Inclusion we must be totally Accessible in society in general and the workplace. That is why we need to change the narrative from #DEI to #ADEI or #DEIA where A stands for Accessibility. The Disability Community is made up of every other marginalized community. We need to not only be at the table we need to be INCLUDED in every decision, policy, etc. It is time, wouldn't you say? #ADEI #togetherwecan

The Abled Workers Unite community wants to know: How can you explain an employment gap on your resume to an employer during an #interview. These are a few things you can do:

  • Tell the truth (always)
  • Explain your medical condition as resolved and ready to work
  • Talk about the training you’ve been doing to be prepared for success

Are you still not sure how to explain your resume gap? Drop us a comment below and we’ll give you our opinion of what's best. Be sure to fill out your profile so I can check your background, and good luck on your #jobsearch this week! πŸ™ŒπŸ½

Members of Abled Workers Unite had a lot to say last week about workplace accommodation. @John Hewitt explained how he asked for accommodation at his current job in customer service:

In my current job i asked for ADA accommodation. The job was for a chat advisor but on the first day of training it was told to us that we would have to take live calls also when the phone queues were busy.

As someone with a voice disability i could not do this, I asked during the interview process if was pure digital communication. I was advised yes, After speaking with my trainers about this i was put in touch with HR. After Paperwork from my doctor office i was given ADA accommodation to do Digital chats and email support. This happened last May and i am still with the same company but now going though my own serious health condition and have been of work since early December 2022 due to having a stroke. My employer has been very fair and good to me and i got no complaints with them.

Thank you John for sharing your experience #togetherwecan

Ask yourself what are the things in your life that you can control. Focus on those things and try not to sweat the rest. #togetherwecan

When I say the word "Accessibility" what do you think of it? I believe we as a Community need to agree on the term and I wanted to get your input. #disability #accessibility #togetherwecan

This week we want to hear about how you have discussed accommodation while on the job. Have you worked directly with your employer to ask for #accommodation before? If so, how did you do it? We want to hear from you in the commentsπŸ‘‡πŸΌ

  1. Don’t ask
  2. Speak to your supervisor
  3. Go to HR for help
  4. Bring in medical documentation
  5. All of the above or something else

What have you done in the past? Tell us in the comments!
