I know that so many of you in this Group are parents looking for work in Hospitality, and might be wondering how to balance your family with a job in #Foodservices! ๐ธ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ง๐ก๐ฉโ๐ง
When I was younger and working at a craft beer brewery, there were very few people on staff that did NOT have kids! ๐ฏโโ๏ธ ๐ฉโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ It seemed like the perfect job for a parent, mostly because you can usually set the boundaries youโd like in your schedule. โฑ ๐ You can make your own hours sometimes, be there for school pickup/drop off, home first thing in the morning, and possibly work while the kids are asleep or in class! ๐ฐ ๐ซ ๐
The wild schedule of the service industry means that no matter what time of day youโre looking for a shift - you can likely find a local Restaurant or Hotel to meet your needs. ๐ฉ โฐ There are ways to tell what your schedule will most likely be before you even apply, depending on what the establishment is serving, and when they are open for Business. ๐ ๐ง๐ฅ๐๐๐ป
Another benefit of working in Restaurants while having children, is that your shifts often arenโt necessarily as long as they say they are on the schedule. There is a system to โcutโ employees, especially excess serving and bartending staff - as the restaurant slows down and the clientele dwindles for that shift. ๐ That means a few people will be able to leave early, and still have made some cash for the day.๐ฐ
Often a Staff that is friendly and have worked together for a while, will let go of these workers first - parents that have to get home for bedtime, or to take care of their families. ๐ฉโ๐ฆ๐จโ๐จโ๐ง Staying longer means a chance to make more in tips, and usually there will be a fair system in place so everyone can leave early once in a while. ๐ฐ Childless Bartenders like me usually stay until the last minute, and want the chance to make as much as possible per shift. ๐ธโจ๐ฅฑ
Another added perk Iโve mentioned before about restaurant work, is being able to take leftover food home. For large families, having a few extra semi-fresh pizzas when they walk in the door, can make mom or dad seem like a superhero! ๐๐ฆธ๐ผโโ๏ธ As a child I had a Stepmom in Graduate school who worked at a local pub, and the shift meals she brought home were a special treat for all of us. The idea that a job would GIVE you food that normally costs a fortune, seemed like one of the best perks a job could offer! ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฉ๐ฅ๐
One possible benefit about working in Hospitality when you have a family, is that there is usually more flexibility when it comes to having a family emergency. ๐จโ๏ธ I am not saying it is okay to call off more often in a Restaurant, we just frequently see it done, and Restaurant Staff are pretty used to being flexible and adapting to changes like these. ๐ฏโโ๏ธ๐คณ
๐ Between the limited hours, flexibility, making your own schedule, being able to call off in an emergency, going home early sometimes, meals to take home to your family, and a chance to be distracted from a hectic home life - there are a lot of reasons Hospitality jobs are PERFECT for parents!! ๐
