As the fourth of July sneaks up on us, I think back to two years ago when I spent the holiday working ALL day under the hot sun. I was stuck lifeguarding by myself from 10am-8pm. Since everyone was out on vacation or they already had plans I remember feeling miserable, while all my friends were at the beach.
When I think back to that time, I can't help but feel a little angry that my boss didn’t even offer to pay me time and a half since I watched the pool all by myself, as a 15-year-old, on the fourth of July. Now that I think back, she wasn’t very nice.
Have you ever been forced to work during a holiday?

The city of Loveland does not pay lifeguards well. The more experience lifeguards do get paid well but the lifeguards coming or the lifeguards with a little experience get paid minimum wages. The city will not allow pool managers more than that minimum wage. Lifeguarding a complicated job and there are so much risk and people depending on you, so lifeguards should get paid more than minimum wage, to begin with. But the city does not seem to care.

Not only was I a lifeguard. I was a member of the community. We guided the youth in the right direction. We served lunch to anyone in need. We also had other programs to keep the youth interested in activities and keep them out of trouble. The boys and girls club was a great place for kids to go to for after school activities and events. We also helped with school work. We as active bodies was able to give guidance and show leadership. The kids would give respect because we showed respect.

They never get your checks right and you never get paid in time
