Leadership Styles
Here are the seven leadership styles that should be considered for any warehouse management position. Management should consider multiple leadership styles to adapt to a changing environment which should mitigate any disruptions in the organization. In my opinion not all leadership styles will work for a particular situation, so it’s always wise to analyze both the scenario and leadership style before implementation.
Democratic leaders, also known as participative leaders, tend to seek gain employees' input before making a decision.
Autocratic leaders, also referred to as authoritarian leaders, establish a clear vision of an end goal and how to achieve it.
"Laissez-Faire" is a French term meaning let do or let them do it. Some critics call it the “Zero leadership” style. It is a philosophy of non-interference. Leaders will give directions or goals and are less likely to check on you.
Transformational leaders, also known as visionary leaders, are strongly committed to organizational purpose and big-picture goals.
Transactional leadership is a "give and take" scenario. Reward or penalizes your employees according to the organization's standards.
Bureaucratic leaders live by the rules. There are certain times that you expect to get things done by the book.
The Servant leaders operate on the idea of service first, lead later. This style of leadership runs on the motto, “You manage other people the way you would like to manage.”
Interviewing for a Warehouse Position
Interviewing for a warehouse position can get competitive especially if it’s a high paying company like Toyota. Aside from having experience, having knowledge of OSHA health and safety regulations will make you stand out from other candidates since warehouse managers pride themselves on safety. In the 20+ years I worked in a warehouse, having knowledge of safety really made the difference in receiving the job offer on the spot. There is even a career as a safety coordinator that can pay an annual salary of up to six figures.
The 6S Lean workplace is a good strategy to mention in an interview which was developed and implemented by Toyota in the 1970’s. Sort, Set, Shine, Standardized, Sustain, and Safety are six key components that will allow an organization to operate efficiently and effectively. I have been hired as a manager where prior managers had let the warehouse decline into some very poor conditions. If a hiring manager gives you a walk-through and you see some safety hazards, point them out and mention the 6S Lean strategy that will assist in preventing future safety hazards. There are a variety safety regulations I will go over, but this post will give you a starting point to research and memorize for any interview you may have in the future.
Not sure what to do about my current situation , I have a job that I've been at for a week now but honestly I only took it because I had nothing else at the time.
