Steps to get your CDL

The first thing you need to do is study for the CDL. Download the DMV study guide from their website. I also recommend downloading the CDL prep app. It’s free and has the same questions as the DMV test. When you are ready to take the air brake and knowledge test, make a DMV appointment. Before your appointment you’ll need a DOT physical from an urgent care. Not all urgent cares offer DOT physicals, so call and find out which one does. They are generally $100 for a medical certificate. When your DMV appointment arrives, take your birth certificate, ID, medical certificate, and two utility bills that prove you live at your residence.

After passing your test you’ll receive a Class A permit and you can either pay $3,000 to enroll in trucking school which is 27 courses 1 hour each course, or you can apply for a trucking company that will provide paid training. Takes around 2-4 months to get your CDL from start to finish depending on the pace you set for yourself. Any other questions feel free to ask.

Fuel Tanker Driver

Hey everyone my name is Alex out of Los Angeles. I’m a fuel tanker driver and I absolutely love my job. 🚛⛽️

I started off working in the ports, but my main goal was to haul fuel which I just recently accomplished in March of this year. ✅

If you’re interested in a career in truck driving, learning how to get into the ports, or hauling fuel; feel free to drop a comment. ⤵️

Here’s a picture of my rig. 📸

Employee Contract

You just recently got your CDL and you have no experience. A carrier offers you a job, but you have to sign an employee contract that is an agreement you will work for that company for two years. 📝

Do you accept the job offer? 🤔

When I first got my CDL I was offered a job with this exact scenario. I turned down the offer because of the possibility of a toxic workplace. I also feel companies that make you sign employee contracts have a high employee turnover rate. Companies with high employee turnover rates automatically present a red flag. 🚩

Turning down this job offer was a really great decision for my career as a commercial driver. I was able to get a job in the Los Angeles ports and now I haul fuel making $140k annually. 🚛⛽️

Do you prefer being a Local driver or an OTR driver?

I personally prefer being a local driver and I would never be an OTR driver. I like to come home every night and love my predictable schedule. 🚛⛽️

”What motivated you to pursue a career in truck driving, and what do you hope to achieve in this profession?”

For me it was the compensation. I have several college degrees and professional certifications and I make more then double as a truck as opposed to warehouse management positions I have held. 💰

When I first started trucking my goal was to work in the Los Angeles ports. I achieved that within two months of getting my CDL. 🪪

My end goal was to get enough experience to haul fuel which I just recently started doing in March. 🚛 ⛽️

I got my CDL in October of 2021 and I have achieved all the goals I set in 2 1/2 years. 😁

How about you? 🤔

What challenges did you face as a new truck driver?

As new truck driver, a challenged I faced was getting low-balled in pay. 💰

I overcame this obstacle by waiting to get 9 months experience and applied for a company paying their employees $100k annually. 😁

What challenge did you face as a new driver and how did you overcome that challenge? 🤔
