A little over a year ago I decided to have a career change. I decided to do an online course UX/UI design. When I started I had no idea what I was doing much less any computer skills. We were asked as students to pick a problem we wanted to solve. ANYTHING... My son was 14 and he has autism. The problem I wanted to solve was to help him be more independent. As of today, I am still working on this project and it is growing into a massive project. I created a working prototype and it has helped over 57 families that have helped me with research. Yet I sit here trying to get a job in the field and I feel like I am not being taken seriously in interviews or on my resume.

What you’ve learned from past jobs and life experiences is incredibly useful to land your next job. And if you want your next job to be in a new industry, you must harness those past skills and transfer them to a new role. Follow these steps:

  1. Decide what you do well (and enjoy doing) — Consider past work experiences. What do you excel at doing, and what do you enjoy doing? Write this info down.

  2. Make a list of your job duties — Create a list of your current and past job duties. What have your responsibilities been?

  3. Record your accomplishments — Create another list of specific successes you’ve accomplished — and include any specific data or information.

  4. Use this information to craft a NEW resume for the NEW role you want — Once you find a job listing for a role you’ve never had, create a custom resume WITH THE INFO YOU GATHERED in steps 1-3. Then you can use this new resume for other job opportunities in this new industry as well.

I have a bachelors degree in ABA and I’m working on a masters in other psychology. But what else can I apply my bachelors of science to? Because it doesn’t earn me anything in ABA anymore and I don’t want to do ABA now anyway. I love the ABA concept but I don’t like the way it is used and I’d love to apply it to another place. #jobsearch #advice #careerchange #education #healthcare #careeradvice #ABA #psychology #bachelors

I/O Practitioner, SHRM Certified HR Manager

Hi Samatha, Well, I can understand where you are coming from; I also studied ABA in the past and practiced as a behavioral analyst technician in the space. As you know, in ABA, you get a vast knowledge of the learning theory. So depending on where you see yourself and find the most fulfilling is key. Navigate further into healthcare, special needs teaching, even in government sectors, as an FBI analyst. Also, if you are still in school, reach out to your advisor, and I'm sure they can help you source some significant additional roles where you can still take the concepts you learn and know and apply them in a different space, along with learning even more. Best wishes moving forward!

It took me years and a lot of debt accrued to earn a degree in marketing for what I wanted to do, which was marketing research. Unfortunately, jobs were not plentiful at the time, and even with my fancy new degree I could not get much work. A friend of mine showed me an opportunity as a Clerk to the Accounting team at a television production company he saw in the job postings, and within 5 years I worked my way into a major television network. Even though the pandemic killed my career, it was an inspiring story up until then. Take every job seriously, work hard, be respectful and you never know what opportunities might open for you. #careerchange #wordsofadvice

Finding a job that suits YOUR personality can be worth it! There is a better chance you will enjoy doing your job if it fits your personality type.

So how do you figure it out?

I'm ESTJ, which matches up with CEO, police officer, and lawyer. Hmm I never thought about those careers before. #jobsearch #watercooler #careerchange
