I took a family medical leave 10 years ago to stay at home and be a full-time caregiver for my disabled son. He passed away a few years ago, and it devastated me to the point of withdrawing from life, my family, my friends...pretty much everything. It's been 5 years now and I'm at a point where Im seriously struggling financially, and I have no choice but to get back to work. Where do I even start though? I did property management for years, and its really all I know but so much has changed in the last decade. I'm even open to a whole new career change if necessary. I'm in my late 40s as well so I'm no spring chick either. How does one re-enter a career after such a long absence? How do I explain my gap in employment on my cover letter/resume as well as show employers that I still have what it takes? #midlife #advice #careerchange

I know the job market is rarely "fair" - I just wish I could catch one break.

I’ve been churning out resumes and cover letters for months now, knowing that a layoff was coming. I thought the rejections would be easier to bear over time, but they are not.

I hope nobody ever has to feel this pain. The pain of once having been gifted with exceptional speaking skills and self confidence, around which I worked tirelessly to start building a promising career. Then having those gifts pulled out from under me by a brain injury, leaving me floundering on the ground, even though I still have the skills and knowledge upon which I started building my career. But nobody has given me a chance to prove their value, just because I can’t speak well in an interview. So those skills and that knowledge for which I worked so hard essentially go to waste.
