Just a note for those fresh out of jail of a great opportunity to become a Software Engineer and for free with a Technology training company founded by and for the ex-felons.

Yeah, you can also attend other institutions that do not charge either until you graduate and find a job. But these guys already somewhat know your story for having been there themselves and are able to support you in other personal ways, which regular institutions couldnt do.

Their name and website: https://www.nextchapterproject.org/

You dont pay a dime and once you complete the course they hook you up with one of their 15 partners ( Slack, Zoom, Paypal, Asana, etc)

Interesting to highlight that all Next Chapter graduates have a 0 recidivism rate. Who wouldnt be motivated to earn 120K per year and in a niche that is assured to never be short of demand?

They do run an evaluation both on your technical and personal skills which makes sense given they will be investing in you.. soo its worthwhile checking thoroughly the requirements with them.

If accepted, you’ll join their Software engineering bootcamp and apprenticeship program.

You can do it from all across the country remotely***

Hope it was useful to some out there👍

I’m setting up a business and I came up with this new work calendar idea.

As we all know, the typical work week is 5 days out of 7, Monday through Friday 9 am- 5pm.

In the goal of improving work/personal life balance some folks came up with the idea of a 4 day working week but with extended working hours. I personally do not see much advantage in this solution: I feel its too much work time packed in fewer days and I feel I would actually need that extra free day just to recover from the extra effort put in those 4 days.

I know my solution would generate some alignment issues with other businesses but I have no problem with it. Here it goes:

The month would be divided into 3 blocks of 10 days. Goodbye 4 weeks per month pattern. See Chart Below

I think this structure allows us to spread out more rest time and achieve true work/personal life balance.

The total days worked in a month amount to 19 vs 20 in the traditional schedule. This means 152 working hours vs 160. I would nonetheless pay for 160 hrs. Employees would only win. But so would the business; my bet is that a more relaxed schedule will increase general well-being and thus productivity.

Imagine you were offered to work in a company with such a schedule:

https://prnt.sc/2P4VRHSZmtai

A) Do you think you would prefer this solution over the traditional 5 days a week schedule?

B) Do you think you would have a better work/life balance with this structure than the fixed 4 straight work days proposal?

Thanks very much for any feedback👍

Or - Are you willing to admit it?

Did you ever hire someone due to her/his looks and or personality in spite of not being the best candidate?

I admit it.... I hired a young woman who killed me with her beauty and way of speaking. She did have a great profile for the role but thing is she was the 4th application I read out of 30-something.. Prefering skills testing, I rarely interview but on that round, I selected her as the first and only interview for that job. I was crazy about her from the first minute and didnt even look at any other applications.

Howwwwever….. ,and before anyone puts me in the pillory and throws their digital tomatoes at me, I vigorously plead NOT GUILTY of any Moral Wrongdoing due to being exposed to Extenuating Circumstances!!

She was a Parisian woman and like many Parisians, she had her eyelids half closed ( if you’ve ever been to Paris, you may have probably noticed this crazy thing) and spoke with a very thick French accent in English… It was like a spell on me** Thats gotta be worth a Pardon on the moral front right?😉😎

Objectively, I know it was truly nasty but I’m super happy I did it because its been 18 years we have been together😋

I had other situations where the candidate was super outgoing and we synched in awesomely but I was able to resist and seek the best fitting profile.

Someone else messed up like me? Or rather, do you dare tell your mess-ups as a recruiter ?😉

Ever feel one candidate is slightly better than another one but because somehow you synched better with the other candidate you chose that person?

C'est la vie les amis..

English version below.

In English:

I haven't tried it so I don't know what it's worth but maybe it will be useful for people who don't speak any English.

Now... If you don't know English, you really should learn it, not only for the practicality but also for moral reasons. Is it fair to live in an English speaking country and pretend to do everything in Spanish? I find it a lack of respect towards locals.

Another dimension that also seems quite negative to me: decades ago in the United States there was "segregation", people of white race went to a restaurant or sector of the same for white people and people of color went to another place or sector reserved for those people of color....

Many fought hard to end that... yet nowadays, we see specific spaces for this or that community popping up... groups for Black or Hispanic people, advertisements, and now apps...

And everyone finds it normal? Yes, I know, today it's called INCLUSION...

I think it's a disaster... but I still share it because others may not have the same opinion as me and it may be useful for them.

And if you'd like to also expand your mind listening to foreign music you’ll never hear on mainstream radio:

1 - Wrong Lines:

As a long-time recruiter I find there are a few lines that keep coming and that are tricky and WRONG. Only a few people realize it.

I’ll stick to one for today:

  • " I am confident that I could be a valuable asset to your team " ( And all its possible variants)

Pay attention to the syntax and logic of the phrase.... Realize that when you say this you are only talking to yourself and you are SELF LABELING. Do you see it?

The thing folks is to achieve that YOUR RECRUITER BECOMES CONFIDENT that you will be a great value to their company, not you, that is a prerequisite…

This means you gotta prove it. How?

By showcasing some of your best recent achievements that apply to that role. Showcasing means you’ll say what was the big thing you did, but then you want to give some context and most importantly, briefly EXPLAIN HOW YOU DID IT. Lastly, tell the RESULTS, what did that change for your company or team?

You can, however, precede this demonstration with a similar line that will show you acknowledge the one needing to acquire that confidence is your recruiter while at the same time reflect that confidence in yourself:

Perhaps something along the lines of: “.... I would like to now demonstrate my skill set through some concrete examples from my most recent experiences. I am confident that through your review, you will sense the exceptional value I can bring to your team I thank you very sincerely for your time considering this application.

So basically, you are confident that if the recruiter reads through your best achievements he will see your outstanding value. The accent is placed in you demonstrating that value. Do you agree its very different?

2 - ATS

I keep seeing many comments from people complaining that for the first time in years its been months, they dont land an interview… There are many reasons that can explain this. I’ll just stick to one today:

It has been said dozens of times on this platform but I also know most of us dont scroll down too much, plus, there are always many newbies. So here it goes again:

ATS stands for automated tracking system, it identifies keywords to the job post from your resume. Most big and midsize companies use it in the goal of saving time and money. I doubt they ever thought about all the false positives they get but thats another story…

Thing is, if you dont have those magic words included or even, not mentioned enough times, your resume will land in resume heaven..

I like to always try and bring solutions so here are 2 great sites you can use for free to prescan your resume before you send them.

If anyone else has other common lines that played against you, would be cool to share👍

For personal purposes, I did some research about companies that would hopefully have genuine friendly hiring policies for the 50+. I came across Directory type businesses that compile lists of companies with such policies but to my regret, I found that none of these directories can guarantee the trustworthiness of their information. They dont conduct any kind of objective audit. .

Some just have companies sign a super easy and short online pledge … For example, AARP but absolutely no control to ensure the signer companies actually fulfill their commitment. Others just offer companies they post a job on their site to be considered age-friendly.

Nonetheless, after many hours, I managed to draft a mini but at least - trustworthy list of genuine age friendly companies.

But actually, my first thought from this shortage of solid, useful information is precisely that it could be a great business idea to set up a legitimate directory website, You could charge users to access your list.

My very small but super-vetted list:

  • Work At Home Vintage Experts: https://wahve.com/ ( Remote work - ONLY for the 50+,they specialize in Insurance, accounting and human resources)

  • operationable.net/scsep ( Only Massachusetts and New Hampshire )

  • Walt Disney World ( Very active in hiring the 50+)

  • U.S. Census Bureau ( For seasonal work)

  • IRS ( For seasonal work) https://www.jobs.irs.gov/resources/job-descriptions/seasonal-employment-opportunities#:~:text=We%20hire%20year%20round%20and,to%20apply%20to%20our%20openings.

  • AMC Theatres

  • McDonald’s

  • YMCA ( Pending on locations)

  • Walgreens

  • Ace Hardware ( In the Retail Stores)

  • Home Depot ( In the Retail Stores)

  • Rover.com ( Dog sitting- walking)

  • National Grid ( Energy sector, engineering and electrical operators, warehouse)

  • Urban Health Plan

  • PKF O'Connor Davies ( Accounting and Tax Consultants)

  • Riverdale Country School New York City ( For teachers)

  • Lee Spring ( Manufacturers of mechanical springs)

  • Silvercup Studios (Film industry, many types of jobs)

  • The Bronx Zoo

  • Steinway & Sons (The Piano company)

  • Educational Alliance (NYC)

  • Veselka ( NYC Diner)

  • Sew Right ( NYC -hires 50+ people to sell and repair sewing machines, fabrics and provide needlework classes )

  • relevantdb.com ( Software Engineers! )

Hope it can serve some out there👍

Ok, so where is the catch right? Unlike many youtubers who always keep the bad stuff for the end, lets get to that right away:

Pay rate isn't great: $11-14/hr But who can say its not a super opportunity for all those in a tight financial situation, an ex felony issue, or having a super hard time landing an interview?

Companies: They are in the Artificial Intelligence field:

Appen - Telus International - WeLocalize - UHRS

What’s the job about:

  • Many available tasks: Evaluating websites to ensure they meet certain quality criteria and match the web search query
  • Evaluating the web query itself: correcting erroneous or incomplete queries so the automated systems from Google, Microsoft etc show better results.
  • Evaluating website and social media ads and posts
  • Translation
  • Evaluating and transcribing Speech to Text files. You evaluate the naturalness of audio files and/or transcribe them.
  • More complex linguistics projects.

Requirements:

  • No experience needed, it’s easy peasy. For most projects, you just need a High School Diploma. They dont check it though.
  • For more complex projects they do require a matching degree and they check it.

Hiring Process:

  • General sign up- May take a few weeks for Appen to approve you. I found the others were faster.
  • Pick a project: Very fortunately, there are always many available.
  • Study the Guides that come with each project
  • Pass an “Open Book” quiz
  • Some of these companies require you to pass a simple English test.
  • If you pass you start onboarding. It can take weeks before you actually start working, it depends on how many people are on that project's roster and their manager’s efficiency.

TIP 1 for those afraid of online quizzes: you can find many of the project's answers in ….. 🥁🥁... REDDIT!

Still, its much better to study the guide because anyway, you will need to know how to do your task once you begin production, plus its very easy👍

TIP 2 To start working the earliest possible

Human nature is such that we always seek the easy way out… so when on those websites, most people apply for the projects appearing in the first pages…

START your search on page 5-6 AND PICK a project you feel is the biggest pain in the rear. Most other people will avoid them and thats YOUR OPPORTUNITY. The projects manager will onboard and get you to work much quicker😎👍

Flexibility

  • Most projects require anywhere from 10 to 20 hrs weekly. You choose when to work.

Performance

  • Although you have no direct boss overlooking your work on a daily basis, this is no party. Your work is being regularly monitored for accuracy by other audit workers and after 3 big policy infringements you’re out of the project** If that repeats on your second project, you will be terminated.

  • My experience working in 3 of the 4 companies is that they are pretty flexible with common mistakes. And if you have a doubt about an issue its best to contact the audit team before they contact you with a flag…

  • In all 4 companies,. you can choose to work on several projects.

Overall best company for me I find Telus International has more difficult quizzes with longer guides to study but they pay a bit more (14), I loved that they are super organized ( Not so for Appen) and they also have customer service roles.

As always, I hope this helped someone👍
